How to stop my two year old from grinding her teeth?

Grinding is very common in children, usually more common in children with baby teeth and adult teeth though. If he/she grinds often and you start to notice the affects on the teeth ask your dentist what can be done. Sometimes they will recommend a bite plate, but not usually with children.

How to stop my two year old from grinding her teeth?
if you tell the dentist they have like mouth guards. my sister grinds her teeth and she is 14 now and her teeth is flatter than usual. so do it soon
Reply:Can be a sign of a mineral deficiency (calcium and magnesium)

can get magnesium gel and add to lotions. Epsom salts have magnesium you could add to bath. calcium can some from leafy greens.

at least these are her baby teeth. When she gets older perhaps a night guard would work for her.
Reply:When I was younger I always grinded my teeth, you should probably get her/him to stop because for me it lead to nerve damage and it was and is very painful when I occasionally grind my teeth.

Post traumatic Stress Disorder has made me started grinding my teeth when I sleep. How can I stop this?

The very best thing for you is a dentist, you have TMJ. Only a dentist can help you w/this. However also a therapist to help you help yourself deal w/stress to help in preventing grinding your teeth. This can lead to more problems later if it's not resolved

Post traumatic Stress Disorder has made me started grinding my teeth when I sleep. How can I stop this?
you can get a night guard and wear it while you sleep. You can get them at Walmart in the sports section or have one made by your dentist.
Reply:That's called bruxism. Untreated it can cause serious damage to your teeth. Is your anxiety otherwise well-controlled? If you are on medication and your symptoms are not well-controlled, I would talk to the prescribing doctor, because ongoing symptoms of anxiety could be contributing.

Is your sleep otherwise disrupted? If not, a teeth guard as mentioned below would probably do the trick. If your sleep IS disrupted due to symptoms/whatever, a med adjustment might be in order. Hope that helps.

My grandson who is 1 yr old is grinding his teeth.he is very halth and active.he has lactose problem.?
Teeth grinding in children is called Bruxism. For more information that you can research type in your search bar "teeth grinding in children". You might also want to take your grandson to a pedicatric dentist. In regards to the lactose intolerance, this wouldn't have anything to do with the grinding of the teeth. My son cannot tolerate cow's milk, we only drink soy milk. But, he is able to eat cheese, yogurt, and ice cream. He just has a problem with a certain enzyme in the cow's milk, but this enzyme is destroyed when it is processed into dairy foods. Your grandson may be intolerant to the lactose which remains in all dairy food.

I hope this helps, Good Luck!

Anybody have any tips on how to stop grinding your teeth?

You have to see your dentist and have him make you a mouth guard.

Anybody have any tips on how to stop grinding your teeth?
mouth guard
Reply:wear two mouth gards to bed
Reply:i have the same problem...aside from the mouth guard....massage your jaw muscles in a up and out motion. it helps.
Reply:There are plastic guards you can buy over the counter, you heat them them and fit them to your mouth. If you are grinding during the day you can go to an orthodontist and get more refined guards that you where except for when you are eating. Other than that find other ways to relieve your stress
Reply:according to old beliefs, slapping the grinder with a slipper or shoe when grinding starts, will put a stop to it

my daughter grinds too, its just too cruel to do that to her
Reply:if you have mercury fillings, get them replaced. it causes it. beyond that, get a night guard made by the dentist or go to the pharmacy dept of walmart and get one.

How can i tell if iam no longer grinding my teeth?

i was on meds.i apparently did it when i slept. i didnt know i was doing it.idont know ifi am still doingit.

How can i tell if iam no longer grinding my teeth?
If you do not sleep in the same room with a someone else, this is a tough one. We can see evidence that you have been grinding your teeth at some point in your life, but it is so subtle, that you would not be able to detect the lack of change if you stopped.

If you used to get headaches and now you don't, maybe you stopped.

If you really need to know, you may be able to get a sleep study done with the specfic request that they just monitor you for grinding your teeth. It can be done, but it isn't cheap.
Reply:this may seem childish but get some fake teeth ya'know like vampire teeth or something put it in ur mouth before u hit the hay and if the next morning ur teeth are messed up somehow that may be ur clue...

Can you advise me on ways to stop grinding my teeth?

I mainly do this involutarily at night when I am falling asleep and possibly through the night. I wake up every morning with the feeling that I have done it all night. I also do it during the day, usually out of nervousness, but not as frequently.

Can you advise me on ways to stop grinding my teeth?
During the night you can protect your teeth with a mouth guard. You can either buy one over the counter at the drug store, or you can get a doctor/dentist to fit you with one.

As for protecting yourself while you are awake? I'm not sure of how to treat that. Perhaps you just have to catch yourself while you are doing it and make a conscious attempt to stop yourself.

Good luck overcoming your bruxism.
Reply:put some aluminum foil in your mouth
Reply:get em pulled
Reply:you can get a mouth guard for at night, i hear it an addiction though...doing it during the day you can try and stop by chewing gum or ice
Reply:wear one of those hockey teeth gaurds to bed
Reply:seek professional help a dentist should be able to assist you with this problem.
Reply:I had to go to my dentist and he took a mould of my teeth and gave me a palate to wear for bed. I used it for maybe two years and then lost it but I don't grind my teeth now so maybe it worked. Plus I was really stressed at the time and I'm not now so maybe that is a factor too.
Reply:they have a mouth guard they sell it at walmart
Reply:if i use arm and hammer baking soda toothpaste not only is is brilliant - it feels wrong when you grind your teeth under its influence
Reply:try chewing on teethers, or something, wear teeth protecters that will definetly work
Reply:Gum. during the day. and make sure you keep them clean. my brother used to do it but we never did anything about it. he has alot of little quirks, mainly cuz the amount of mental problems he sufers from.
Reply:Your dentists can make you a special brace that you wear at nigth that should prevent that. Try taking a dolomite or other calcium/magnesium tablet an hour before bed and maybe a cup of camomile tea or warm milk. These relaxants could help. Also, if you can make a conscious effrot during the day to stop that then it might break the habit and this might stop the night time grinding also. As Its delia has said, try chewing gum as a distraction away from that. Magnesium will help calm your nerves. If your nervousness is really bad then I also suggest taking a B Complex tablet. Good luck. Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
Reply:try chewing on something like candy or gum,or seeing a doctor because it seem like u might have bad nerves.there's also a variety of mouth guards u can get.if all else fails..go see Dr. Phil..lol...
Reply:A good dentist will get you a form to put in your mouth at night, and it will keep you from grinding your teeth. My daughter had the same problem with her teeth. She has beautiful white teeth now. You must take action. This will protect your teeth from wearing away.
Reply:PUT THE TIP OF YOUR TONGUE BETWEEN YOUR TOP LIP AND TEETH,THIS AUTOMATICALLY STOPS YOU BITING DOWN--ALSO HUM OR SING ,YOU HAVE TO RELAX YOUR JAW WHEN DOING THIS
Reply:Teeth Grinding is a complex problem . Many times It cannot be solved by a night guard alone. See your Dentist and ask him to refer you to a TMJ specialist.
Reply:I have a night guard that the dentist molded from my teeth. It's a hard plastic that snaps over your teeth when you put it in at night. Your teeth are harder than this plastic so when you continue to grind your teeth, you're not doing any damage to them. Dental night guards can last for many years depending on how much you actually grind your teeth. They can be quite expensive. What I did before I got mine is I bought an athletic mouth guard for less than $2. You stick it in hot water to soften up the plastic then mold it to your teeth. It's difficult to mold it right so it stays on your teeth so you have to train yourself to keep it in your mouth while you sleep. But it does prevent you from doing more damage to your teeth while you sleep.

Is there anything that can help me stop grinding my teeth at night?

yes to the last answer. You can either go to the dentist and they will make a "custom" fit plate/guard that you put in your mouth at bedtime, or I have actually seen some over the counter, like at wal-mart. I don't know how the comfort level of those versus one from your dentist would be, but I do know the "professional" ones from the dentist are real slim-line FOR THE comfort factor. It's just like a plate you put in, like what football players wear to keep their teeth intact.....but a whole lot slimmer. By the way....grinding the teeth at night is called "bruxism"..........hope that helps

Is there anything that can help me stop grinding my teeth at night?
The orthodontist can give you a little guard to wear at night.

How to stop my 5 year old from grinding her teeth at night?

Are there any other alternatives to a mouthguard? She has been doign it at nigth really loud for at aleast a couple of years but it is worse lately and I am afraid she could choke using a mouthguard at that young age.

How to stop my 5 year old from grinding her teeth at night?
I can not state emphatically enough that you should never, ever consider getting (or making) an appliance to stop tooth grinding in a five year old. This would stop proper growth and development of the jaw where the appliance is worn.

It is my opinion that baby teeth are designed to be worn away as the jaws grow and develop. This allows for different growth rates and it allows for the accommodation of the permanent teeth with their much more pronounced cusp forms when they start to come in.

You may wish to ask your dentist to check for underlying problems, but 99% of the time - if not more - this is just part of being a five year old.
Reply:put an electronic mouthguard so that when she bites down it shocks her
Reply:The only alternative to a mouthgard I can think of is a pacefier (SP).
Reply:Extract the teeth with a pair of plyers
Reply:I would consult your dentist. I am sure he can get you a mouth guard she won't swallow.

As for the other woman who answered the question, a 5 year old should NOT use a pacifier.
Reply:take her to her dentist and if that doesn't help then take her to her doctor
Reply:i used to grind my teeth until i was 10 and then it just mysteriously stopped! just wait a bit then ask a dentist or doctor for alternatives to a mouth guard.
Reply:It's in response to stress. Try to find out what's bothering her, maybe try massage at night before bed. And get a custom fitted mouthguard. It's only her baby teeth so if she ruins them, she'll have replacements but you want to stop it before she gets her permenant teeth.
Reply:you could go to a pedidontist. they are dentist who specialize with young children. if you don't want to go that route, go to a sporting goods store like modell's, sports authority or a sporting goods store in your area. there you can buy mouth guards that children wear when playing sports. they come in sm, med, lg and maybe xlg., and an assorment of colors that you child can choose from. that might help you. good luck!!
Reply:Kids tend to grind their teeth. It's just something they do. It goes away as they get older. I've seen some children who've ground their teeth almost down to the gum line.

They still have healthy adult teeth that come in when the time is right and have no permanent complications.

The mouthguard really has no benefit at this age and is more of a choking hazard than anything else. The pacifier will not stop the grinding and will likely cause orthodontic tooth movement requiring braces in the future.

Unfortunatley you'll just have to live with the sound for a while longer. But as she ages, the problem will resolve on its own without any help.
Reply:i put a mouthgaurd in mine at night, i would end up drooling in the morning, i don't do it anymore b/c of that, and they say my teeth r small.

so go to a dentist, or get a mouthgaurd (not molded to the mouth!)

Good

Luck!

My Boston Terrier, 3yrs old, has recently started grinding her teeth. Has anyone else had this happen?

you need to call the local vet to get further information

My Boston Terrier, 3yrs old, has recently started grinding her teeth. Has anyone else had this happen?
I would gues that it's suppose to reduce plaque. My dog did it once. He's a whatchamacallit. lol But he does have terrier in him.
Reply:My dog grinds her teeth when her ears hurt. Other cases I've run into are anxiety. If the dog has no physical outlet, it can grind its teeth out of boredom as well. Try keeping her on a regimented exercize program (after a vet visit of course - she might be grinding out of pain somewhere else) and make sure she has a job of some kind (even if it's just obedience training). Most dogs if it's anxiety or boredom related will stop if exercized daily for at least 30 mins. outside the home.

Hi! how do i remove my mannerism of grinding my teeth while sleeping?

i have been having this problem since i was 14. i am now 24,male,

Hi! how do i remove my mannerism of grinding my teeth while sleeping?
There is no way to completely remove it, but there are things that you can do to try to protect your teeth---get a mouth guard. You can go to your dentist and have one specially made for you or go and by one from one of your local stores. The second option is much cheaper, BUT not nearly as comfortable as getting one specially made for you. Of course it will take some getting used to and it will be uncomfortable to begin with, but it does not take very long to get used to it and the amount of money it will save you in the long run (dentistry wise) is amazing.
Reply:You can now buy over the counter a dental guard that you can modify to your own teeth - this is worn on the bottom teeth during sleep. Years ago I paid a dentist a lot of money to make me a silicone mouth guard for sleeping and it helps tremendously.
Reply:A doctor or other professional could work with you using biofeedback to help you relax. In the meantime get a mouth gaurd made so you don't ruin your teeth or hurt your jaw.
Reply:get a night guard. You cab get them at the drugstore, but you should probably go to the Dentist- get an exact mold of your mouth. I have used one for 2 years, and I get less headaches now.
Reply:The reason your grinding your teeth at night is because of emotional tension and stress. I do the same thing
Reply:I'm sorry I can't give you a specific product answer because I had a college buddy 37 years ago (yeah, I'm a bit older than you, lol) and his dentist told him that if he didn't quit grinding his teeth while sleeping that he wouldn't have teeth to grind by the time he was 30. I don't know what he did about it since it's been so long ago, and "I've slept since then", but I do wish you the best in finding a "cure". God Bless you.

My 3 years old son has been grinding his teeth when sleeping. What can I do to stop him from doing it? Thanks?

If your child has bruxism (teeth grinding) your doctor may suggest a mouth guard or protective dental appliance (splint) to prevent damage to the teeth. Your dentist can make a custom mouth guard to fit your mouth. Over-the-counter mouth guards are available and they're less expensive than custom guards, but they generally don't fit well and can dislodge during bruxing.

My 3 years old son has been grinding his teeth when sleeping. What can I do to stop him from doing it? Thanks?
I would contact your family dentist for some sound advice of how to help keep him from grinding his teeth. They should be able to give you some insight.

I know there are mouth gaurds that you can wear at night, but i don't know if this is the best option for a 3 year old.
Reply:I have a daughter who did the same thing. The doctor told me to go to a sports shop and get a childs mouth guard. You will need to soak it in warm water and then place on his top teeth and have him bite down for a few seconds. The plastic will harden to the shape of his teeth/mouth. Put it in every night and at naptime if needed. It worked great for my little one!

Good luck!
Reply:Sorry it is annoying but a normal occurrence for some people to grind their teeth. Sometimes it only occurs when the person is very tired from a big day of activity. Keep track to see if this is the case with your son. If so have him do a 'quiet time' activity 1 hr before going to bed.

If this continues mention it to the Dentist as they have guards to keep the teeth from being ground down over time. Good Luck
Reply:My daughter used to do that when she was 3yrs. She's now 8, and she doesnt do it anymore. I had asked the dentist about it at the time, and he said that they can make a mouth guard, but its doubtful that a 3yr. old would wear it. I would give him time. My daughter only done it for awhile, maybe 6-8 months, and then she never did it again.
Reply:Contact your dentist. Make an appointment. Most likely they'll make him those like clear plates to go over his teeth at night.

Good Luck.
Reply:I've been told this is a inherited condition, my other half has been doing this now for 33 yrs and both sons do this as well. Good luck

My nine month old has just started grinding her teeth. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Nah, same thing is happening with my year old. She apparently found out that she has teeth and she just likes the feeling..Give her about 2 weeks at the most..She will stop...I promise.. If after 2 -3 weeks, she doesn't stop...just make a routine call to the Dr. and just casually mention it . Usually they forget and go on. My daughter has already stopped after 2 weeks of making me get cramps in my neck due to tensing up when she does it. LOL

Take care...

My nine month old has just started grinding her teeth. Is this something I should be concerned about?
Try not to worry it is a little normal she is just getting use to her new sensations going on in her mouth her gums may start to bother her a lot so get her a teething ring
Reply:My son did that too, I took him to my dentist (even that young) and they didn't seem concerned. They said to keep an eye on it, and if he continued to do it as he got older, they could deal with it then (when he is old enough to sleep with a mouth guard).

He outgrew it so we never had to do anything about it.
Reply:it is normal nothing to be worried about
Reply:My daughter did the same thing for a couple of months and then just stopped. Don't worry.
Reply:Im not a doctor but my daughter did the same thing. I think she just discovered them and it was a way of exploring for her...a new sensation. She grew out of it, it didnt last very long.
Reply:No. Teeth are new to babies, they make a neat noise if you do it just right. He/She will stop when they get bored with this new experience.
Reply:No my Friend,She probably is getting more teeth coming threw,My daughter did the same when she was teething,Get her something to chew on,They have ligiud,Rubber, round teethers, you put in freezer and when they do tyhat give them that to chew on,You can buy in any baby stores or like toyr r us,ect.Good luck,Hollywood!
Reply:they all do it, dont worry
Reply:no its prob. just a fase itll pass just occupy the baby an thell him no its not good to do that if you are really worried just ask your doctor
Reply:My daughter used to do that. She outgrew it...(and she has beautiful teeth)... so don't fret about it, I think they do that to get used to their teeth.

Does any one know, anything about bruxer(grinding of teeth or clamping of Jaws) while sleeping in most cases?

i have woken up twice now with a pain in my jaws and the only thing i could relate the pain to was if i'd held my jaw clumped shut for ages. Does anyone out there know what this means or what might be causing me to do this.

Does any one know, anything about bruxer(grinding of teeth or clamping of Jaws) while sleeping in most cases?
well night grinding or bruxism is a codition where patients grind teeth while sleeping and there are various causes for it to develop as mental stress ,occlusal stress due to some over or high filling or some illfitting prosthesis or restoration and sometimes while orthodontic treatment, anxiety, fear are the usual causes it leads to loss or wearing of tooth structure leading to sensitivity and temporomandibular joint disorders like discitis etc

you should avoid stress and do certain relaxation exercises or can even take help of psychologists to relieve stress and consult your dentist to get yourself a habit breaker or mouth guard or correction of the restoration or prosthesis.
Reply:It can be a zinc difficiency. Ten mg once daily and see what happens.
Reply:This is a normal habit that some people experience when sleeping. This can be caused by stress or a nervous habit that helps you get to sleep. I would suggest going to the dentist to get a nightguard so you don't grind down the cusps of your teeth and have to spend a lot of money to get it fixed.
Reply:yes .. its stress.. whenever i stress my jaws are killing me ..because when i sleep i stay clenched for hours ..they sell teeth gaurds at walgreens ..i beleive ..
Reply:~~~ Possibly stress is causing you to grind and clench your teeth at night. Doing this for a long period of time may wear down your teeth. I suggest going to your Dentist and get fitted for a night guard if it continues. Or you can also go to your local drug store and purchase one over the counter. They are about $20.00, easy directions for fitting to your teeth. I did ask my Dentist what the difference was,, her nightguards vs less expensive. She said over the counter ones are fine for temporary, but if grinding/clenching is ongoing and serious, then a professionally fitted one from the Dentist is suggested for better fit and comfort.
Reply:Stress can cause clenching or grinding, which can cause mobility and chipping of teeth, I know from experience and have been a dental assistant for quite a while, try an athletic night guard from a sporting goods store, if that works well have your dentist make a professional one, this allows your jaw to stay in a neutral position, eliminating pain most often
Reply:I agree with the majority of answers...

But I would skip the OTC 'nightguard' or 'sportsguard' and put that money towards a professional one from your dentist. It will be more snug-fitting to your teeth and won't need to be replaced quite so soon.

Some people grind/clench/brux during the daytime hours without even realizing it....

Good Luck!

:)
Reply:The Clamping of the Jaws is something that we call "TMJ" short for Temper Mandibular Joints. There are ways to treat these some will go away in time. It is best if you go and see your Dentist/Orthodontist.
Reply:Did anyone hear you grinding your teeth? If not then how many packs of gum have you been chewing on in a day? If you've been gritting your teeth or sucking on themin your sleep youll notice in the morning your tongue will have a funny shape in the morning when you stick it out and look at it..the shape of all your teeth..

Why it happens.. I dunno but maybe your mad at someone dreaming about it.. or you chew too much gum..

What is recommended to stop infants from grinding their teeth?

They do outgrow it and I found that distraction helped with my little girl. I don't think it does any real damage, but talking to your pediatrician about it might help you feel a little better about it. Also, some kind of teething ring might help, since that (teething) is probably the cause for the grinding. Good luck to you!

What is recommended to stop infants from grinding their teeth?
Its usually just a stage they go through. They will stop by themselves.
Reply:My son did this at about 9 months. I was really worried that he would damage his teeth, but he stopped after a week or so. When he would do it I would distract him and he would forget all about it.
Reply:My 10 month old just started doing that today. He has 4 teeth coming in and it sounds awful! I don't have an answer for you but I'm interested in everyones answers. Sorry:(
Reply:MY DAUGHTER DID THAT FOR ABOUT 2-3 MONTHS. FINALLY SHE JUST STOP DOING IT ON HER OWN ....BUT MAN THAT SOUND WAS HORRIBLE....THANK GOD SHE STOPPED
Reply:teething ring, or just have them suck on a pacifier! Don't let them get attached to the pacifier because its hell getting it away!

But ask around to see if its healthy or if it might cause long term damage to teeth.
Reply:Truly their is nothing you can do about it as far as I know. Is just another stage that they go through because they are experiencing something they never felt before. It's like they are experimenting. If the baby is doing it while they are up, give them a teething ring. I put the ring in the fridge because it soothen that itchy feeling they are feeling. Thats the reason they are grinding their teeth to begin with. They also sell that over the counter teething gel you can put to numb it just a little but dont over use it. Good Luck and hope this helps..
Reply:I think it's something that all babies go through. It's called bruxism. Some kids do it as a response to pain such as earache or teething. It usually doesn't hurt a child's teeth. Nighttime grinding and clenching can wear down tooth enamel, chip teeth, and cause tmj. They usually outgrow it and it doesn't cause to many problems. Hope this was helpful.
Reply:My father, uncle and grandpa are dentists and they have said over and over again that it does no harm to their teeth. my father says "if they want to do it and you cant stand it just brush their teeth and it may get their mind off of it and if not at least they will have clean teeth"

I doesn't harm them or their teeth, it is just a noise that they can make that sometimes they like. Two of my three girls have done it and they stop after a while.
Reply:Like someone else said before, its a stage. My son would grind his teeth just for the heck of it, but he stopped after a week or 2 and hasn't done it since.

How do you stop a child from grinding their teeth all the time? Not just in their sleep (always)?

It's part of the growth process don't worry. Mouth guards are not indicated for children, Because they are in acgtive growth.

There teeth can be bonded so they wear down the composite rather than their teeth. I've only seen 3 -4 children out of 4000 or so in my career actually go throught the whole tooth. I suppose the nerve pain stops them in most cases.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

How do you stop a child from grinding their teeth all the time? Not just in their sleep (always)?
dre is correct. do not use a bite guard for a child. it will stop their growth of the arch that you put it on. let them grind away. it is only baby teeth and will not effect their permanent teeth whatsoever. Report It

Reply:How old is the child? Talk to your dentist! A mouth guard at night would be good, but as a 43-year-old who has ground her teeth away to nothing, I URGE you to do something quickly!
Reply:Buy a mouth guard.
Reply:ask your dentist, he can make a special mouthpiece that can also be worn during the day for children who grind there teeth.
Reply:Buy a bite plate. they are like a mouth gaurd slowly they will grow out of it
Reply:I can only help with teeth grinding at night. give your child a mouthguard at night. that should stop it. I dunno, maybe if your child wears it at night, the teeth grinding may stop druing the day also.
Reply:seems logical to talk to your dentist but can I suggest you talk to your doctor. When I was that age I grinded my teeth night and day too. It was because I'm an asthmatic but didn't really show it. Does she do this during the day after running around a lot? At night the cool air can aggravate asthma. You might be suprised

Why do my teeth hurt so bad? How can I tell if I was clenching my jaw or grinding my teeth while I slept?

If you're grinding in your sleep, your teeth will hurt, but also your jaw will hurt. If you think you might be grinding, go to your dentist as soon as you can because it can cause bad damage. Headaches, earaches and things like that too... when you grind your teeth in your sleep, you grind with like 10 times as much pressure as you do when you are awake, so it is really bad for you.

You can get a really good night guard here: http://www.splintek.com/ph/products.html

My husband grinds his teeth and I got it for him, and a few weeks after using it, he stopped grinding.

Why do my teeth hurt so bad? How can I tell if I was clenching my jaw or grinding my teeth while I slept?
I grind my teeth when I sleep. My dentist showed me on my 2 front teeth how at the bottom they were a little uneven, plus by husband told me I do it. Wear a mouth guard.

My 1 year old daughter is grinding her teeth. Is this bad, and how do I get her to stop?

This is called bruxism. About 1 in 6 children do this and nearly all grind their teeth at night but daytime tooth grinding should be of more concern. We don't really know why children develop bruxism. There are theories about why - the deciduous teeth don't fit together comfortably so the child grinds them down to fit together better and bruxism becomes a habit - the child is tense, afraid or angry - the child has an allergy or nutritional deficiency - but none of these theories has been proven.

Most children develop bruxism at 5-6 years of age but it can start at an ealier age. Most children stop on their own without intervention. They grow out of it. It's not an emergency so you can mention this to your daughter's dentist at her next visit.

My 1 year old daughter is grinding her teeth. Is this bad, and how do I get her to stop?
You need to take her to dentist and he will help you. Not sure if he can make a mouth guard for a baby but I would think they can.
Reply:You can't. It will happen her whole life. Most likely she got it from you or her mother. It is her personality and how she handles all the stress in her life..Yes, babies have stress too. When she is in her late teens (18-20) have a night guard appliance made for her...No telling what they will be like in 20 years. My daughter has been grinding all her life. She gets it from me. Just grin and bare the noise...it'll drive you crazy..lol

GRINDING TEETH

"My 12-month-old grinds his teeth while awake and sleeping what can I do to stop him and will it hurt his teeth?"

In general, grinding the baby teeth is not a problem. It is often a sign of teething, very likely for a 12 month old. When he starts losing his baby teeth, the grinding should stop (if it even lasts that long). If he is grinding his adult teeth, then that is a different story, and a dentist should be consulted to look for damage. He might suggest that a tooth guard be worn while sleeping.

Dr. Jim

My son is almost three years old. He would grind his teeth at first when he got them all in. If you make a big fuss over it, she will do it more to get a rise out of you. I know its annoying as heck but with babies you cant stop it. And since they love to get a rise out of you, if you make a big deal over whatever it is they will do the thing that bugs you over and over. and what the other people above said is also true as well. But I can tell you that he does not do it anymore. Its just something new and different and she is seeing what her new teeth can do.
Reply:I sometimes grind my teeth, and wake up with headaches. This could be a problem for a 1 yr old. I also have caused some problems with my teeth, some are flat, sore, etc. Since she has her baby teeth some of this doesn't matter but you should see a doctor about it. For me the reason for grinding was because of stress. This is my expierence with teeth grinding...
Reply:That is normal so dont worry about tell your doctor and they might do somthing about it!
Reply:It is a normal muscle reflex for children. Lots of children grind their teeth but tend to grow out of it when they have a full permanent dentition(all permanent teeth). there is no way to make a "nite guard" for children since there jaws and teeth are constantly moving and shifting. It is horrible to hear your child doing this but be reassured that lots of children do have this reflex and she may grow out of it as she ages and acquires more permanent teeth.

How do we stop babies from grinding their teeth?

There is nothing clinically to use for a baby to stop teeth grinding.

If is during the day and it is a "teething child" try a teething ring. If they are older try giving them a Popsicle may be soothing.

If the grinding is at night time there really isn't much you can do other than repositioning their head to help alleviate the jaw position.

How do we stop babies from grinding their teeth?
Are they awake or asleep? If they are awake and just doing it for fun, I'd bring on the distraction, chew toys, gum, suckers, etc etc. If they are doing it in their sleep they probably have a jaw problem. I'd visit a chiropractor, I don't know anyone else that actually fixes teeth grinding. A dentist will just say, "wow, so they are grinding their teeth. In a few years they'll have very sensitive teeth. Probably a jaw problem." A chiropractor will probably say, 'Hmm, her neck is out of place making her jaw line up poorly, this will probably help." And then after one appointment you'll see pretty distinct improvement.
Reply:It's probably a novelty.

It may mean that the child is bored, or hungry. It could also be a remnant from when the child was nursing and he/she is still trying to go through the motions and hasn't realized yet that it accomplishes nothing. This seems like the opposite extreme of a child who has become addicted to a pacifier, and loses teeth due to never taking it out.

I'd think that once a child gets used to eating solid food then he/she will realize how/when to chew and stop grinding.

Thankfully baby teeth are temporary so consequences from worn down teeth will not pass on to later in life. If grinding continues for more than a few weeks after you try to communicate with the child I would take the child to the doctor/dentist.

Re: Previous answer

The joints in the neck are not related or connected to the jaw in any way, so a reallignment of the spinal column would do no good. Also, I believe that orthodontists deal with the whole realm of jaw/teeth orientation. A dentist would know if the grinding could cause serious damage based on how intensely and how often it was taking place
Reply:get a mouth guard and make sure they don't swallow it. talk to your dentist.

This can't be the strangest idea, but get a boxers' mouth-guard....you'll only rub teeth against plastic then.

Your dentist can provide you with a mouth guard for exactly this purpose.
Reply:your dentist can make you a mouthpiece to wear at night to stop the grinding. a sports mouthpiece might work til then.
Reply:go to your dentist and they can give you a bite-gaurd thing. my husband is getting one cuz he does it too!
Reply:A good ol' fashioned gum guard - like the ones boxers use!!! Works like a charm!
Reply:Your dentist can have a mouthgard made for you to wear while you sleep. Otherwise you can usually find them at wal mart or something, too, but your dentist will get it custom to your mouth. I've got a couple, we make them where I work. They work great.
Reply:You can where these protector things at night, ask your dentist for one next time you have a regular visit.
Reply:Get a mouthpiece from your dentist.

Reply:go buy a plastic teeth cover........boil it in water to make it soft and when it cools off a bit put it in your mouth to get the shape and then sleep with it.........no more teeth grinding
Reply:you may have to wear a gum shield like ones boxers use, my aunt has had a grinding problem for years and there seems to be no cure, but a gumshield will protect your teeth and stop the noise

Reply:Take them out and put them in a glass by the bed!
Reply:Your dentist will be able to fit you with a mouth guard. If you cannot get to a dentist try fitting yourself with a sports mouth guard that you can find at any sporting goods store.
Reply:Abit stupid like but wear a hockey mouth guard ^^

It'd work
Reply:Bite guard.
Reply:at walmart they have an item to prevent you from doing that. but you have to wear it its not like a pill or something.
Reply:I had this problem, and didn't even know it until I went to the dentist and he could tell. Without spending a large amount of money, you can fix this problem with a small purchase. Go to a Rite Aid, or CVS, or another pharmacy/retail store, and in the dental isle, there will be something called a "Doctors Night guard" It is in a white and blue box. It is a mouth guard to be worn at night, and comes in sizes xs-xl. It is comfortable, and flexible and soft.

Other then mouth guards there really is no way to prevent yourself from grinding in your sleep, as you can't wake up every time and stop yourself ya know? Good luck.
Reply:A mouth gaurd can help your teeth when you sleep. Ask your dentist to see if you can get one. It will help because if you don't your teeth will get shorter.
Reply:My sister-in-law has this same problem. She solved it by buying a sports gum guard at our local Wal-Mart. They're (obviously) found in the sports department, and really cheap! You just have to follow the directions on the packaging to make it fit your mouth, but it helps a lot! Plus, they're soooo much cheaper than the ones a dentist will make you get and do pretty much the same thing!

Hope that helped!
Reply:You can get a mouth guard from your dentist. That will prevent yourself from grinding your teeth in your sleep.
Reply:Your dentist can make you a personalized night guard, or you can go pick up a generic one up from walmart.

Whats the best therapy for not grinding my teeth at night?

You should see a dentist and have an occlusal nightguard made. I have seen some repsonses here saying to get those soft ones that you can buy in sporting goods stores. However, that is the problem, they are soft and eventually you will grind through them.

A proper guard made through a lab through your dentist will be made of a harder acrylic material. When it is fitted the bite will also be adjusted to be most comfortable and best for your mouth. Grinding can lead to other issues such as TMJ problems and that in itself can become a very painful situation.

I have a nightguard and although I have gotten better about my gridning/clenching at night, I only wear it now for a few nights a week. They take some getting used to, but are worth it to save your teeth.

Whats the best therapy for not grinding my teeth at night?
wear the smallest, thinnest and most comftable gumsheild......as in the gumsheild boxers wear
Reply:my dad actually has this problem and he just bought a mouth piece like one you would wear in football.
Reply:get a night guard, this will prevent damage
Reply:Go to your dentist and have them make you a bite gaurd that you wear at night!

It really works, and saves your teeth and jaw!

It's expensive, but worth it!

Get a good dentist, and get a consult.

you will want the HARD bite gaurd, you will knaw right thru the soft ones!

good luck
Reply:A nightguard for your mouth; but NOT the kind you get in stores. Go to a dentist for a referral to a specialist. The ones you get in stores you will either

a) grind through it

b) have it improperly fitted (won't stop grinding and can harm your jaw)

c) just wont use it

Trust me when I say go to the professionals and pay more...I wrecked my jaw by grinding my teeth. My husband tried to save us money by getting a cheap store one and he never uses it; it falls out of his mouth and he feels like he is choking. (even after trimming it like they said)
Reply:first, go to a dentist to make your very own mouth guard or you can go to a dental lab (for the cheap one). then, Hold a warm, damp cloth next to your face for 10 minutes before you go to bed to help calm your jaw muscles. reduce alcohol, caffeine, and anti-depressants consumption the best medicine is try to relax and reduce stress, specially before u sleep by meditating, taking a hot bath, or just streching. sleep tight:)
Reply:Grinding your teeth at night can be due to a lot of things. 1) stress. Have you every caught yourself clenching your teeth when you are in a stressful situation? I have! Studies have shown people to apply as much as 4-6 times the biting force when they are clenching or griding their teeth (called parafunctional habit) at night. 2) Clenching and grinding can also be due to imbalances in your teeth which cause problems when your teeth come together. What causes that ?!? If you have dental restorations that are not anatomically correct and do not fit into the teeth that oppose them in opposite jaw, you can have imbalances. If you have teeth that are positioned strangely (because of crowding or the anatomy of your jaw and teeth) you can have imbalances.

That is just to name a few. Because there are many factors that contribute to a clenching habit, there are many types of treatment. Some patients will try hypnosis, yoga or some other relaxation technique. Some patients find that using muscle relaxers help.

Most patients find that an occlusal guard (aka nightguard) works. Often these do not stop you from clenching or grinding, but they protect your teeth and muscles while you do.

The problem with a nightguard is that once you get one, you may be reluctant to wear it. That is up to you.

If you do want to get an occlusal guard keep in mind the following:

1) a store bought "do it yourself" appliance is not going to cut it. a) they are too bulky - they are uncomfortable so you will probably not use it. b) they are too soft - you will chew a hole in it in a few days. c) they are not customized to your bite in order to give you a "mutually protected, non interfering balanced occlusion" - as we nerdy dental types call it.

2) talk to your dentist about getting an occlusal guard. a) have the dentist explain to you what they are making. It is more than a piece of plastic to put between your teeth. If made incorrectly, it can make your clenching worse which could contribute to joint problems, teeth problems or tenderness in your jaw muscles or headache. Essentially they are designed so all teeth lightly touch when you bite together, but if you slide side to side or front and back, only the front teeth should touch. If your dentist is not interested in making you an "occlusally balanced" appliance get a second opinion.

The buggers are more complicated than what most people would expect - but if they are done right they can give you a lot of relief. You aren't paying for the material; you are paying to have it designed to fit your needs - hence the cost involved.

Also, once you start wearing it, you may begin to hear noises in your joints, or your bite may feel different. This is a normal process. When you clench, the muscles tighten and shorten. This changes the position of the jaw joint. As you remove the interferences (in your teeth) by putting a smooth piece of plastic between them, you change how much force you can apply when clenching. The muscles begin to relax and this changes the position of your jaw joint (hence the noise and change in bite). Don't be alarmed. Continue to visit your dentist as much as you need to have adjustments made to the appliance until you are comfortable.

Good luck!
Reply:It's called a nightguard. You can get one specially made by your Dentist or they now have them over the counter in the dental section of like Walgreens, CVS, or Walmart. It's very important to do this due to the problems that can be caused because of the grinding. Make sure your Dentist is aware of this problem. Good luck to you!

How can you stop one from grinding the teeth in the sleep.?

People who suffer from bruxism almost always require a mouth guard to stop the behavior. Talk with your dentist.

How can you stop one from grinding the teeth in the sleep.?
A special type of dental gear similar to a retainer can keep you from grinding your teeth while you sleep. Ask your dentist about getting fitted for one.
Reply:You usually can't.

You can buy an athletic mouth guard at a sports store for a couple of dollars. Usually works as good as one made by the dentist.
Reply:PLEASE LEARN FROM WHAT I DIDN'T KNOW. A YEAR AGO I HAD MY FRONT TEETH. PIECE BY PIECE THEY BROKE OFF AND I JUST HAVE THE ROOTS. I AM ON DISABILITY AND THEY DON'T COVER DENTAL, AND THE INCOME YOU GET ISN'T ENOUGH FOR ANY DENTAL WORK.

I WAS AT WALMART SEVERAL MONTH AGO, AND THERE FOR $20.00 WAS A GUARD FOR YOUR TEETH FOR NIGHTTIME SO THAT YOU DON'T BREAK OFF YOUR TEETH. IT LOOKS SIMILAR TO THE FOOTBALL MOUTH GUARDS. IT IS LOCATED WITH THE TOOTHPASTE AND TOOTHBRUSHES.

Teeth Grinding Clenching Ask The Dentist Richard Winter Question:

Pediatric Bruxism - Infant Noisey Teeth Grinding: I have an 11 month old boy.

He has four teeth on top and three on the bottom. He has been grinding his teeth since he was about 9 months old. He is grinding his teeth down.

Sometimes he uses so much force, it sounds like he is going to crack his teeth. Is there anything I can do to help him save his teeth? ...Visitor from Michigan

Answer:

There is nothing to be done at this age. If you are truly concerned and there is substantial wear on the child's teeth, you need to go to a pedodontist or children's dentist to examine them.

Usually, Mother Nature regulates the wear on infants to make sure they are able to successfully last, til the next set arrives.

Reply:Well just give him something to bite. I use to give my little one crackers when he started doing that he seem to love the noise it makes when he's grinding them. he was about like the same age. that only lasted like a week and then he stop dooing it. I don't think you should worry about it? good luck!!!
Reply:go to the doctors and he will do something about it
Reply:let him chew on a frozen bagel, or a teething ring. don't get worked up on the baby teeth... it's the major 2nd set that you need to get worried about. all of your teeth are already in your mouth, and they come only when they are ready to. kids lose their teeth young, so don't get too worried. just try things to get him to stop.

Is there a way to stop grinding you teeth during your sleep?

There are a couple different ways. The first thing is to have your dentist make a custom mouth guard to wear during the night. At first, this doesn't keep you from grinding them, but rather protects your teeth from damage. After you have worn it for a while, you be become used to it so that the grinding will diminish until you don't do it at all. I recently had a root canal done on a tooth, because the many years of grinding finally lead to exposing the nerve in my sleep. It didn't take long for me to wake up and stop grinding. My mother could hear me grinding my teeth in the middle of the night from the other side of the house. I would't suggest trying this method but, she would stick a rolled up sock in my mouth. The mouth guard works so much better. My dentist told me that stress is the #1 reason that people grind their teeth in their sleep. Finding the source of the stress could help also, but would be difficult to determine. Its best to do something about your teeth grinding before its too late, when you hit the nerve, you will definetely know it. Good luck !

Reply:Grinding teeth is normally associated with stress. Stopping is hard. Most people use a mouth piece to keep from destroying the enamel on their teeth.
Reply:Yes go to walmart and get a mouth guard. You form it to your mouth and sleep in them. They work really great. But you should get the more exspensive one it works better
Reply:I dont know i just bored dont ask me this is supposed to be fun not scientific

Sorry
Reply:Getting a mouthpiece is the only way that I know of. Or maybe your stressed and should find a way to relieve the stress so it doesn't come out while your sleeping by grinding your teeth.
Reply:Get a mouth guard from walMart or somewhere like that and wear it when you sleep
Reply:Yes. The dentist will make you a soft thing to put over your teeth at nite. When your stress is relieved, it usually goes away. Some people grind their teeth all the time. Your dentist can help you.
Reply:Yes, try a form-fitting football teeth guard (which is what football players use during a game). Saw off the strap, since you don't need to attach it to a helmet.

Do you SNORE at night as well as grind your teeth? If so, tell your doctor you may have "sleep apnea" and need to be tested for it.
Reply:No, but you can go buy an inexpensive mouthgaurd from walmart. You can find it in the toothpaste isle. The mouthgaurd with stop any further damage to your teeth's enamel, and probably decrease headaches if you have started getting them!
Reply:See your dentist and have an occlusal guard made. It will save your teeth.

Reply:Oh my gosh! My dentist is extremely upset with me over this issue! I am 38 years old and still do it! My daughters do it too and very loud. I have noticed that I have a certain pattern of wearing due to it. HTe best way is to get a mouthpiece. I don't have one but when I went to get my teeth bleached they gave me some trays to use at night. They really work for dual purposes....just a thought that may help. Also try taking some tylenol before bedtime. I had sore jaws from grinding and it really helps the discomfort the next day.
Reply:Many reasons...could be stress, too much caffeine, sore gums. I would recomeend you see a dentist and be fitted nfor a mouith guard or take a good look at your innerself and see if you are dealing with too much stress..or caffeine consumption!
Reply:There is a plastic device that you can place on your teeth while you sleep that you can get from your dentist. It might cost you a bit of money, and not sure if your insurance will cover it or not. You might have a condition called TMJ so call your dentist and make an appointment if you can.
Reply:The easiest (and least expensive) is to get one of those mouthguards that football players wear. They come with a special gel to make an impression of your teeth (you'll understand when you see one) so when it is in place, it fits snugly. The dentist will give you the same thing, except he'll charge you a lot more than what you'll pay at Sports Authority. Trust me. We got one from our dentist for my son, but it broke, so I went to Sports Authority and bought one and it worked the same way.

Good Luck
Reply:I and my husband both do this mine is stress, I know but he has the toxicity of mercury in his teeth as fillings. It does help to have a nightgaurd but have a mercury free dentist a natural one check you out. It is much better than others out there. Good luck.
Reply:What I do is I wear a mouth piece. One like football players wear.

I had a dental appt. this week, looks like a night guard is the only way. My dentist did say it could be stress related too. My teeth hurt RIGHT now, i clenched so much last night.
Reply:Mouth guard is the only way. I clench in my sleep and sometimes during the day. My dentist made me a splint that goes over my lower teeth and it has helped tremendously.

Why is my 17 month old grinding his teeth?

This is perfectly normal. Its caused from having a soft TMJ (its still forming). Its not at all comparible to adults, who call it bruxism and is due to things like stress. You may start to notice "wear" on his teeth. Which you can see the teeth going down due to the grinding. But a child's "pulp" in his tooth shrinks when the tooth is grinded down. Which means there is no cause for concern. Although an adults pulp does not shrink and gets sensitive. Basically, this is very common and no need for concern, until he gets his permanent teeth. It just sounds really bad!

Why is my 17 month old grinding his teeth?
Many thanks to mikeysmom. It really helped me to have this new behavior normalized by an informed individual. Report It

You can get a night guard made for you at the dentist or you can buy a cheaper one at the store.

My 4 year old is grinding his teeth while sleeping....why? is this stress related...?

No, most of the time its involentary. When you hear him doing it give him a bit of a nudge to turn him over and see how fast it takes him to start back up. My daughter did it for a while but has stopped. If it persists or you start noticing anything going on with his teeth, take him to the dentist and they will give him a mouthpiece to protect them.

I'm so tired of grinding my teeth constantly day and night. Any solutions?

Grinding teeth usually associate with stressful life style(are we all!) I would recommend first try behavioral modification: Take it easy with life, don't take work home, relax, do things that are not stressful couple hours before you sleep, take a long bath, better yet take a vacation. If you want a quick fix, try over the counter night guard which probably wouldn't last long, or visit a dentist have them make you a night guard.

I'm so tired of grinding my teeth constantly day and night. Any solutions?
Suggest you see your dentist and have a mouth guard made - it may not solve the problem, but it will save your teeth. A friend of mine had one, and after a month of wearing it she no longer had the problem.
Reply:Use a mouth guard...You can have your dentist custom fit one for you, or you can go the quicker, less expensive route, and purchase a sports mouth guard.(these can be bought at drug stores, sporting goods stores or their section in places like wal mart, etc), Drop the guard into boiling water for about 10 seconds, put it in your mouth and it will form to fit.you. Wear this while you sleep and you will not grind your teeth. Get a clear one for daytime use, however, the custom fit works better for this, as it is more "comfy" and less bulky. good Luck!!!

Do you get tmj from grinding your teeth together?

The symptoms of TMJ / TMD, which affect millions of adults and children, can gradually appear with no apparent, specific cause. They also can occur after a trauma, such as a traffic accident or a blow to the face. Even subtle repeated traumas, like clenching the teeth or excessive gum chewing, nail biting or cradling a phone between your shoulder and the side of your head can cause TMJ / TMD . These conditions can also be caused by a bad bite (dental malocclusion), which is not synchronized with healthy muscle and joint function. Systemic diseases and developmental abnormalities also can cause TMJ / TMD

but i could help you better if I'll know why you are asking this question , do you feel that you have TMJ , or just worried

Do you get tmj from grinding your teeth together?
sorry idk what tmj is
Reply:Yes you can. You can also lose some teeth from grinding. Go to this website for more information.
Reply:Yes.

tmj is Tempromandibular joint disease

grinding your teeth is called Bruxism

it is more of a habit

your dds can give you an appliance to put on your teeth at night to keep you from grinding them

it does damage your teeth
Reply:Definately. This one of the main reasons people get TMD. People who grind their teeth often have muscle hyperactivity in their jaw and this is a major cause of joint pain.

Reply:It is common for children to grind their teeth in their sleep, most of the time they grow out of it. I know it's like running your nails down a chalkboard. But if it continues to get worse, take him to the denist and he may be able to fit him with a mouth piece or give you advice on what you can do. My oldest has been grinding her teeth since she was about 4 and now she's 23 and still grinds. The problem is over the years of grinding she has developed TMJ, which is nerve damage to her jaw, she can't eat an foods that are crunchy or chewy now. She has to take Nuproxin every 2 weeks, for 5 days, 3x a day. And if she has to go to the denist to have her teeth worked on, he doubles her Nuproxin 3 days before she goes in. Along with TMJ she can't open her mouth very wide without a lot of pain.
Reply:I did that when I was a kid. It usually is a symptom of stress or something difficult he needs help getting through
Reply:Has something significant happened recently? A bereavement? Family problems? New baby? Has something happened at daycare or playgroup? Teeth grinding is usually stress-related, and the best way to stop it is to find out what is bothering him. In the meantime it might be a good idea to get him a mouthguard.

Good luck!
Reply:take him to see his pediatrician, usually it is a sign of something medically going on that can be remedied with medication. ( in the islands the first thing they would do is treat the child for worms)

I have a problem w/grinding my teeth @ nite-the dentist suggest i get a nite guard that cost $475.?
Hey girl, Just wanted to say I would split the bill on the mouthguard since it's my fault you spent so much money at the mall last night. Or you can use one of my boxing mouthpieces. They are in the side pocket of my gym bag. They came with $10,000 of insurance just in case you fall out of bed and chip a tooth. I love you so much.
Reply:Look for one online or over the counter.
Reply:try those football players mouth guards at the drug store or there is a new mouthpiece out for like 60 bucks that i have heard about through readers digest
Reply:GET A GOOD BRAND OF FOOTBALL MOUTH PIECE, WILL COST YOU ABOUT $10.00... DOCTORS ARE ALL ABOUT MONEY...
Reply:there are night guards that you can buy over the counter at a drug store, that might work, but I'm sure the one your dentist is suggesting is fit for you, and not a generic one. Either way, it's cheaper than losing teeth!
Reply:$475? u can buy like 3 ipods for that. Get a lacrosse or hockey mouthpeice and put that in at night. I know, i use to do that.
Reply:You can get the same thing at Wal Mart for about $30.
Reply:My sister had the same problem, but our dentist suggested picking up a mouthguard from a sports store. WAY cheaper.

Funny story about that, actually. She happened to pick up her mouthguard from Dick's Sporting Goods. Later on, I overheard our mother asking my sister where her Dick guard was...she was, of course, referring to the mouthguard, but still...it was pretty darn funny!

PS - Just checked the ***** Sporting Goods website and they sell mouthguards for $2. :)
Reply:oh i had the same problem. so now i have a clear retainer from my ortho. it was like.. $100? i don't know. but its customized so it works well.
Reply:The mouth guards that you can buy in drug stores that are used for sports are soft and not as effective as what you can get from your dentist. Your dentist will make a hard one that forms to your teeth and he will make sure that your bite is level to minimize the risk of developing TMJ, if you don't have it already.
Reply:What your doctor suggest is not crazy it is just putting a band aid over a sore though. My step dad had grinding teeth problems and his dental records were very poor he had all kinds of problems. On top of that no one could sleep because the noise sounded like nails on a chalkboard. If a habit forms after doing it for awhile, then if you do the reverse for awhile there is a possibility that it won't continue. The problem with the mouth peice is that it costs alot and would only guard your teeth (incidentally a mouth peice at a sports shop only costs 9bucks, and you put it in boiling water to form it to your mouth, it may be less comfortable but try this first) would not stop you from grinding it would stop your teeth from being damaged.

Behavior modification: Practice putting your mouth in a neutral position behind your upper front teeth -- where it's placed when you say the letter "n." Then separate your teeth slightly. Repeatedly relaxing your jaw in this way can help break the teeth grinding habit. Use stickers or other visual cues in your car, home or workplace as a reminder to relax your jaw.
Reply:You can use the nightguards that you can buy in the store, but they are MUCH bulkier %26amp; don't last very long (even if you can get used to wearing it). The one that your dentist wants to make is custom made to fit your teeth-so it is much more streamlined. I'd think about getting that one
Reply:Mouthguards do cost a lot. But, they are worth it. They last forever. They are comfortable. They protect the structure of your teeth. And, they don't make you feel like chewing.

A sport mouthguard that you buy for just a few dollars does not provide any comparable benefits. They cost almost nothing. But, they are not worth more than that.

Hopefully, such mouthguard is covered by your dental insurance. If it is not, I suggest you finance it by earmarking money for it in your flexible spending account, if the company you work for offers this employee benefit. The tax benefit from a flexible spending account would reduce the cost of the guard to you by a full third. So, the after tax cost to you would be reduced to about $300.
Reply:there is a "niteguard" at the drug stores and wally world (walmart) that costs about $40. you customize it to your mouth and go ( takes about 5 mins. directions included). it is big but it helps alot. that's coming from two faithfull users that have kept the other 30 teeth. good luck!!
Reply:I just had mine made here in the Philippines, It's made of hard transparent plastic and costs only P3000 or less than 60 US dollars. Used to have one that's like soft silicone plastic but that got lost and is cheaper but more comfortable to use.
Reply:You can try the store bought kit. The nightguard kit is a piece of plastic that you boil in hot water, mold it around your teeth when it is flexible , and wait for it to harden. Then you cut off the excess material. These kits are less costly, but also are of a lesser quality. You get what you pay for!

My ferret seems to be grinding his teeth, is there something wrong?

He is only about 3 months old and only does it when he's eating. what should I do about this

My ferret seems to be grinding his teeth, is there something wrong?
Ferrets grind their teeth when they have an upset stomach. Possibly the food they're eating is causing indigestion. In a 3 month old ferret, you can give liquid pepto-bismol with a syringe....no more than .5mL twice a day. Just a note....it will make his stool come out tar black, but that's just a color difference....nothing to worry about. :-)
Reply:he needs braces.
Reply:Have your vet look at his teeth.
Reply:Take the ferret to a vet and get it checked out. Rodents grind their teeth when they are in alot of pain. Something hurts and it's not going away. Take it to the vet asap.
Reply:maybe he's teething..and if that's the case u can't do much..it'll be unitl his teeth all come in...
Reply:This is a sign your ferret has an upset stomach. It could be as simple as his food not agreeing with him or as serious as a blockage or ulcer. Take him to the vet.

My 13 month old is grinding his teeth, any suggestions to get him to stop? is this normal?

My daughter did this and it drove me nuts, she stopped when all her molers were in.

she liked to chew frozen waffles, but every kid is diffrent

My 13 month old is grinding his teeth, any suggestions to get him to stop? is this normal?
its normal...i have done it my whole life. It sucks because my jaw's are really sore some mornings. My dentist just told my mom to wake me up when she hears me doing it. When he gets older they will suggest a "night guard". Sometimes they grow out of it. I haven't though.
Reply:My daughter ground her teeth when she was around 18 months. I asked the doctor and he said it was just a phase they go through. It is possible it helps relieve aching in their jaws from teething. You might mention it to your son's doctor, but I don't think you need to be too concerned. There isn't much you could do to stop him at this age.
Reply:My son did the same thing. I used teething toys and someone told me to use beef jerky.
Reply:grinding teeth, at least how the doctor explained it to me, is normal. It's the baby exploring new things, like teeth! It seems like the more you discourage it, the more they will do it. Some doctors say that babies start grinding at night when they begin to dream.

My baby does it during the day.
Reply:Nope, it is totally normal and I know it is enough to drive one crazy, kind of like finger nails on a chalk board. I asked my daughters dr. about it and he was like "oh yeah, they all do it". It will slow down. My daughter is 2 and only does it once in a while now rather than all the time.
Reply:I think that it's completely normal. I have an 18 month old little girl and she still does it. It makes me cringe everytime I hear her doing it but I haven't figured out a way to stop it. So when you do just let me know!
Reply:sorry dont know as my 13 month old still doesnt have any teeth
Reply:My daughter used to grind her teeth so bad that you could hear her from downstairs when she was sleeping. The dentist said not to worry that she should grow out of it and if she didn't there isn't anything that can be done until her grown-up teeth come in. She ground her baby teeth real small. She is now 8 and doesn't do it as much. now the dentist say's I can buy one of the teeth guards they sell at cvs.
Reply:Our daughter did this too. One day she just stopped.

They learn they can do it then get over it. It shouldn't

be too long and they will learn something else lol.
Reply:At that age, probably not a problem. As others said, probably just testing out those things that popped up in the mouth.

But, later on, if they do it for long, they will grind down their teeth, can cause teeth to move, and cause joint (TMJ) problems, headaches, and other things. Be sure you discuss with a dentist if it does occur for years, and they can either get a fitted mouthguard at the dentist, or use a football mouthguard or one that you can buy at a drugstore.

I hav a problem of grinding my teeth while sleepin???doubt??

they say this is responsible for the jaw pain and locking i have been experiencing...they adviced using a mouth guard...where do i get one???is this serious problem??

I hav a problem of grinding my teeth while sleepin???doubt??
Best to go to a dentist and be fitted for one.
Reply:don't sleep then
Reply:A dentist can fit you with a mouth guard.

You might be under a lot of stress. Reduce or eliminate the stress and you'll probably stop grinding your teeth.
Reply:i know this sounds gross, but have you tried treating yourself for worms. they are easy to pick up from animals and apparently can cause teeth grinding. i think it can be a serious problem if its bad cos it grinds all the enamel off your teeth (and can keep ur partner awake, my husband is a grinder).
Reply:In that case don't try Ecstasy. That stuff will make you grind them more, haha. I swear everyone grinds their teeth on it. It's kinda weird.
Reply:You most likely have TMJ. Go to webmd.com and look it up-it will tell you all about it. You can go to your dentist and be fitted for a mouth guard to wear at night to alleviate the problem.
Reply:I've seen them at Target in the pharmacy section. If I were you, though, I would go see your doctor about it, they can fix it sometimes and at least save you a couple of bucks by prescribing the guard. But definitely get a guard, you are risking your teeth and arthritis as well as a loss of sleep.
Reply:only reason one gnashes teeth is because of stress and sometimes worry ocer a loved one or it could be anything the best way with out fitting a mouth guard is to tap your right toe with you finger nail it's like a flicking gesture the kind you do shoo off an insect fom your desk or paper with your thumb and index finger hard five times before going to sleep and when you are doing it think in your mind that your not going to grind your teeth tonight.... it works i have experienced it myself it's a scientific solution in ayurveda
Reply:Your dentist can help you get the right guard to help. And yes it is serious, you can damage your teeth and even break them so get it sorted out as soon as you can. My hubby put off getting one and has actually broken a tooth and snapped a ceramic filling!!

Cost him much more to get the repairs than the guard would have in the first place!!
Reply:It is called bruxism and includes clenching and/or grinding of the teeth. Some have wrongly characterized bruxism as a habit. Bruxism is caused by the activation of reflex chewing activity. Chewing is a complex neuromuscular activity that is controlled by reflex nerve pathways with higher control by the brain. During sleep, the reflex part is active, while the brain control is inactive. The result is an abnormal chewing action known as bruxism. Some dentists believe it is due to a lack of symmetry in the teeth; others, that it reflects anxiety, digestive problems or a disturbed sleep pattern.

As for the second part of your question, generally, mouth guards cover your upper teeth only, but in some instances (such as if you wear braces or another fixed dental appliance on your lower jaw), your dentist will make a mouth guard for the lower teeth as well. Your dentist can suggest the best mouth guard for you. An effective mouth guard should be comfortable, resist tears, be durable and easy to clean, and should not restrict your breathing or speech.

If you grind your teeth at night, a special mouth guard-type of dental appliance – called a nocturnal bite plate or bite splint -- may be created to prevent tooth damage.
Reply:I had the same problem, I went to they Dentist and had a soft night guard made. There are a couple of types hard or soft. It work wonders for me. No more jaw pain. It can lead to TJM, if you don't have it taken care of.
Reply:get your dentist to advise you of a suitable one to use
Reply:My mom grinds her teeth. There is really nothing you can do to stop because you are asleep when you are doing it. The best thing to do is to get a mouth guard. My mom waited too long and her teeth were cracked. Just go to the store maybe something like Academy and by a mouth guard. I think some can be found in the football section. Its a little bit of a hassle but is better then 100's of dollars of dental work from it. You can also call your dentist and ask for something from him. I hope it all works out.
Reply:A nightguard is a good start, but you need someone to really evaluate your bite to determine why you grind. There is a position in which the jaw is fully seated in its "socket" and there's a position where your teeth "mesh". If these two aren't in harmony, then that can be the cause of grinding and/or clenching. The jaw relaxes an goes into it's "socket" then the teeth try to close and when they do, it brings the jaw out of it's socket, and the battle begins. A nightguard will help prevent wear on the teeth, but it is only a temporary fix. I recommend seeing a dentist that deals with occlusal issues like that. Do some research and find a dentist who truly focuses on improving the bite, not simply the appearance. A nightguard can be made by your dentist by taking an impression of your teeth in the office. They'll make it from a model of your teeth, and it's usually ready in a couple of days. Remember it's a temporary fix. Do your research.

go find you a hunk of tree, anice thick branch.he needs to chew to grind his teeth down. they have to nawg on something. i find they like the small soda bottles. they love to chew of the lids. if they don't chip their teeth down he won't be able to eat.
Reply:its probably normal but call the vet and ask... r u sure hes not just trying to get the food way smaller?
Reply:Sometimes they need to be trimmed.. sometimes they are loosing baby teeth, sometimes it is an infection (or it could be just to annoy you) if you are concerned though call your vet
Reply:his fang are getting to sharp and he is filling them down, with ferrets, hamster, gerbil etc,all members of the rodent family their teeth never stop growing, and if they don't file them down the teeth can grow threw the bottom lip,or cause them not to be able to eat or drink,or cause other heath problems.

Is there anyway to stop grinding my teeth when I sleep?

wear a hockey mouth guard

Is there anyway to stop grinding my teeth when I sleep?
ive heard of a night guard, check with drug stores

Reply:go to walmart and buy a mouth gurad
Reply:Buy teeth guards
Reply:There is not a proven way to stop you from grinding your teeth. It usually happens at night, and is usually caused by stress/anxiety. Wearing a night guard is going to help to rid of sensitivity caused by the grinding and will help protect your teeth from breaking/fracturing off. You can try over-the counter ones--heat them up in water and bite into them to fit to your teeth. Or you can go to your dentist and have a custom one made-- a little expensive and insurance doesn't cover but it is well worth the comfort.
Reply:I've been told that grinding your teeth at night is your body's way of reacting to and relieving stress. Stress is everywhere in life. Good stress and bad. People can catch themselves during the day when they clench their teeth but at night I haven't found a way to do that. ( I wear a bite splint every night to protect my teeth and TMJ)

How can i stop from grinding my teeth in my sleep? Anyone know what causes one to do it?

There are a number of causes, from tensions in the neck and jaw (physical) to emotional states.

The best way to minimise damage is to see your dentists and get a dental shield that you can wear at night. In extreme cases grinding can cause teeth to crack, so it's worth doing.

Once you've made sure your teeth won't get damaged, you can ask your dentist to check out any physical causes and refer you to a specialist if necessary. If there's no physical cause you might want to look into some kind of stress relief, but eliminate the physical causes first as they're the most common.

i have been grinding my teeth for years...i recently got porcellin veneers done and at my consultation i was informed that i had the problem.my husband used to wake me nightly to get me to stop grinding my teeth.i had to purchase a night guard,it works great hard to get used to but worth it.for me stress was the cause of my doing it.you'll definatly need a guard.they cost around 500 dollars and you could need more then one a year, mine was covered by insurance.good luck.
Reply:my sister grinds her teeth in her sleep and the dentist gave her a retainer to wear while asleep...as yours about one!
Reply:If you can't get the splint like me. Go to the sporting goods store and get one of the teeth guards the football players use and it will help just as well.

What is the cause of grinding the teeth during sleep.whats the medical term for that?

Bruxism,

What Is Bruxism?

Bruxism is the medical term for the grinding of teeth or the clenching of jaws, especially during deep sleep or while under stress. It comes from the Greek word "brychein," which means to gnash the teeth. Three out of every 10 kids will grind or clench, experts say, with the highest incidence in children under 5.

What Causes Bruxism?

Though studies have been done, no one knows why bruxism happens. But in some cases, children may grind because the top and bottom teeth aren't aligned properly. Others do it as a response to pain, such as an earache or teething. Kids might grind their teeth as a way to ease the pain, just as they might rub a sore muscle. Most kids outgrow these fairly common causes for grinding.

bruxism
Reply:It's called Bruxism. The link below gives some reasons for this. Some old wise tales say it's caused by stress.
Reply:The medical name for teeth grinding in your sleep is bruxism. The cause of it is usually stress related. Other causes include jaw misalignment (occlusal discrepancy) and it can be a side effect some anti-depressant medication, although some anti-depressives can help stop teeth grinding.

My daughter needed braces. The ortho said it caused her to grind her teeth and make her jaw click. My son actually ground down his teeth and had to have them built up with metal.Luckily these were his baby teeth and it's over with now.
Reply:I grind my teeth constantly all through the day.

It wears my teeth down slightly, says my dentist, but otherwise not an issue.
Reply:This can be a sigh of stress, especially in men, when it occurs while sleeping. I have only seen it once when this guy was awake. This could lead to jaw problems.
Reply:The "clacking" is the sides of the jaw. Grinding comes along with this.

He should be wearing a mouth piece to bed in the evening. Prevents the grinding.

His jaw should be looked at by a dentist. Can't remember what causes the clacking.
Reply:usually stress or anxiety. sometimes its just habit to grind your teeth, ie when asleep watching tv or concentrating.
