How can i stop grinding my teeth?

Bruxism- teeth grinding

Grinding your teeth at night regularly, or bruxism, can be a very annoying habit, and have some serious consequences. Recent studies have shown that it can lead to teeth aches, chronic headaches, consistent jaw pains, and even the crumbling of your teeth. Here are some ways that can help you overcome this:

The mouth guard:

Many people have had success with a mouth guard recommended by their doctor. It's worth a try, but it can be uncomfortable and tiring to always wear that when going to sleep.

Get rid of the caffeine:

Cut back or avoid any food or drink that contains caffeine. Studies show that when people reduce their caffeine intake, the teeth grinding decreases.

Reduce alcohol consumption:

Teeth grinding can get much worse after drinking alcohol. If you drink, make sure you keep it in moderation, and drink a lot of water before going to sleep. That will reduce the intensity and the chances of grinding your teeth.

Stop chewing gum:

Chewing gum can train your jaw and your jaw muscles to clench and move in the same manner as during teeth grinding. It can make it more likely to occur. Bruxism causes your jaw to move a certain way, thus causing the teeth to grinding against one another, so it's best not to incite your jaw to do this like it does with gum.

More water:

As mentioned above with the alcohol, drinking a lot of water can help reduce bruxism. This is because dehydration has been linked to bruxism, and drinking plenty of water can counter that.

Reduce your stress:

More likely than not, bruxism and teeth grinding are related to a mental issue. Stress and anxiety can increase your chances to grind your teeth. Therefore, it would be beneficial to try to rid your existence of the stress, by doing things such as stress counseling, exercising, yoga, etc

If you are consciously aware that you grind your teeth you can train yourself to stop the moment you notice. However many people (myself included) grind their teeth at night, so in that case you'd need to get an appliance fitted by your dentist or orthodontist.
Reply:You can buy mouthguards at your local drugstore that help prevent you from grinding. They're a bit pricey though... around $50 or $60.
Reply:To stop it at night, ask your dentist for a protection plate to sleep with.

To stop it during the day, practice massages: from your temples down to the sides of your jaw. It relaxes those muscles, and after a couple of weeks the grinding will be rare.
Reply:I had to go to the dentist and get some silicone mouth guards to put in my mouth at night. In the day I have to make a conscience effort not to do it.
Reply:Buy a month guard before you ruin your teeth.

How can I stop grinding my teeth?

This is a new one for me. I don't feel stressed and I know it's not drug related. My dentist though says it possibly is stress. But could it be a habitual thing? My jaw now aches from the sporadic clenching either way. And yeah this is my last stop before going out to get a second medical professional opinion.

How can I stop grinding my teeth?
pull all of them out
Reply:my friend grinds her teeth when she sleeps and the dentist gave her a bite gaurd to put in her mouth.
Reply:stop doing cocaine
Reply:There's some kind of device that helps with this, I don't remember what it's called, but ask your dental care provider about it. I don't believe any type of medication can help this, but the best I can say is talk to your dentist.
Reply:I have TMJ, which is where I clench my jaw at night. I would just go to a drug store and buy a cheap sports mouth guard. It's the same thing I paid 500 for and it will keep your jaw apart enough to keep you from grinding.
Reply:Ask your dentist about a bruxism appliance. They range anywhere from $200-$500 depending on your location and dds fees. Also walmart or probably any similar store carries generic mouthguards for around $30-$40. The difference is your dentist will make one that fits your mouth exactly.

Reply:Your dentist can fit you with a night guard that is just for this purpose. You can get them over the counter but they will not fit you as well as the one the dentist will give you, so if you find the OTC one is uncomfortable if you should go that route..don't give up the idea of going to see your dentist.
Reply:I grind my teeth to, I've been told to get a guard.
Reply:A mouth guard is the best way. It'll prevent your teeth from being in contact while sleeping.

You can either have one made by your dentist, or they sell kits at most pharmacies so you can fit one for yourself.

It's usually by the medical devices or the dental care stuff.
Reply:One of the most common and effective ways to stop the damage caused by grinding and clenching is the use of a nightguard. A nightguard is a plastic device that fits over your teeth and is worn at night to protect them from the damage caused by grinding. There are many types and styles of nightguards. Some are hard and some are soft; they may be worn on the top or the bottom teeth.
Reply:Get a gum shield from the dentist or a good sports shop. This is usually a sign of stress and will go when you are not as stressed. In the meantime a gum shield will stop you ruining your teeth and keeping your other half awake all night.
Reply:try a gumshield, that might work
Reply:A standard mouthpiece (Athletic) from a sporting goods store. Boil it in water to get it soft and bite down on it. Fit it to your teeth etc. works great.
Reply:sleep with yo mouth open hahahahahahahahahaha
Reply:ask your dentist to fit you with a gum shield
Reply:Wear a gum shield!!!
Reply:I'm going to be different from everyone that's answered so far. It may be something as simple as a case of threadworms. When I was a child this was a well known symptom of having them. You should be able to get something over the counter at your chemist and you may just find the grinding stops.
Reply:take them out !!!

and put them in a glass!
Reply:AHA!

This is called BRUXISM, you can:

massage the muscles over the backof the jaw, the ones that go hard when you tense your jaw, or you can get the guard the others have been suggesting. If there is stress, deal with that first if you can to reduce the impact of the grinding.
Reply:It is difficult for anyone to suggest how you can stop night grinding.

The usual treatment for this condition (bruxism) is for you to wear a soft plastic splint over your teeth at night. This appliance is made by a dental/maxillo facial technician on a plaster cast of your teeth.

The causes of night grinding are many e.g Stress, chewing problems, over large dentures or restorations (fillings), it is best for you to seek help from your local dentist who will examine your mouth and if necessary make an appointment for you with a specialist who has maxillo- facial qualifications. These specialists are often to be found in Dental Hospitals or large general hospitals.
Reply:I had this problem and ended up going for a mouth guard fitting at the dentists.

I've used gum shields when playing rugby for years, the types that you immerse in boiling water for a few seconds shake dry and then put on your top teeth bite and suck but having tried these first they are too bulky and do not fit nearly as well as one you get from the dentist.

They take a mould of your teeth in a sort of gel and you come back about a week later and try the mouth guard. I've had mine for a year or so now, it still fits very well is considerably smaller then a sports mouth guard and sits happily stuck to the roof of my mouth at night preventing the grinding.

When I started using it I immediately noticed the jaw pain stopped and curiously I have not needed another filling since, so I am guessing that the grinding was degrading the fillings and reducing their life.

The only problem with it is that it does collect tartar so it need a good old brushing and leaving in a cup of diet coke one in a while.

I'd 100% recommend getting one straight away, you aren't going to be able to reduce / remove the stress that may be causing you to grind straight away and a gum shield will only mask the caused but it works perfectly
Reply:There is a special appliance called a night guard that you can have made at your dentist it cost around £50 you were it every night it wont stop you griding your teeth but it will stop anymore damage to your teeth. If your griding your teeth that is normally cause by stress try to relax or address the issues that are causing you stress.
Reply:Get a cheap mouthguard/gum shield from your local sports shop. Just say it's for Hockey ^^

How do you stop grinding your teeth while your asleep?

While some of the answers you have received gave you some good advice i.e....the mouth guard, that only deals with the symptom not the cause. The fact is, gritting and grinding your teeth is the symptom that exposes outwardly one or more emotional issues you are dealing with internally. While it happens to patients with all their natural teeth, I label it "EDS" for patients who wear dentures (Emotional Denture Stress)...Emotional Stress can manifest itself in a number of ways but tooth grinding and tooth gritting is a classic symptom. There are six basic areas from which Stress comes, Marriage, Money, Employment, Sex, Health and Self Esteem...dealing with issues that any of those areas cause can trigger the gritting and grinding. However the issue may not be your personal one but instead that of a close relative, mate or friend, i.e.....you may have a loved one suffering from a terminal disease and your so emotional affected you begin to grit and grind...that is the "Health" area I labeled as one of the six areas. Keep this in mind, Stress is in reality no difference than an Appendix, when either becomes infected it has to be dealt with and treated. Not to is to court emotional disaster. I would suggest that you seek out a professional counselor and find out where your Stress is coming from, if you don't already know. In either case counseling is where you will find the tools to deal with it. I wish you well and take care.

How do you stop grinding your teeth while your asleep?
buy a shield, you can get them from chemists
Reply:yes shields for your mouth from big pharmacies
Reply:take them out and put them in a glass ...LOL
Reply:You can buy a mouth guard from the Dentist that will stop the damage to your teeth while sleeping.
Reply:Well first of all why are you grinding your teeth? Are you having bad dreams? I mean your teeth are always going to grind together, actually its kind of painful now that you think about it. But anyways yes I would go to a pharmacy and ask for teeth protectors.
Reply:Visit your dentist. A nightguard (sometimes called "night splint") may be helpful, but can be expensive. A less expensive option is a boil-and-bite athletic mouthguard that you can get from a sporting goods store. You boil it at home and fit it to your teeth. They are soft and you may chew through it over a bit of time, but it is a good tool to determine if a more permanent guard from your dentist would help you.
Reply:i dnt know but ive got the same problem and my jaw really hurts!!!
Reply:my boyfriend does the same ant it is annoying... however i asked my dentist what could i do to make him stop and he recommended a night guard shield called sleep right... you should try it
Reply:get a night guard, and if you can't afford one, train yourself to put your tongue in between, so you don't grind. (it doesnt hurt, thats why you have pain receptors). Also, reduce your stress. take a hot steamy bath, or shower before going to bed, where you can relax your mind and body.
Reply:brush your teeth with superglue before you go bed
Reply:visit dentist
Reply:i find when i got alot on my plate and a wee bit stressed it makes me grind my teeth or when ive got a cold i tend 2 do it ask your dentist about it

How do i stop grinding my teeth in my sleep? just that ive wakened up with a really sore jaw?

Grinding your teeth at night, Bruxism, can be stress induced. Reduce the stress in your life and see if it helps. In the meanwhile, get a mouth guard from a dentist to prevent further damage to your teeth.

How do i stop grinding my teeth in my sleep? just that ive wakened up with a really sore jaw?
Get a mouth piece like a sport one and wear it while you sleep.
Reply:Pleeeeease someone have a good answer to this cos i have exactly the same problem!
Reply:What are you stressed about son?
Reply:have a dentist make u a bite plate

that u bite on at nite
Reply:Your dentist will give you a mouth guard thingy like boxers wear and this will solve it
Reply:Get a mouthpiece - like one you can by for football or other sports. Or you could spend more money and get fitted for one at your dentist's office.

You should also get to the root of the problem. Obviously you are really stressed out about something or anxious or whatever causing you to grind at night. I've done it and it's now causing problems with my teeth. My ex boyfriend used to do it and let me tell ya...that is the most horrible sound to wake up to is someone grinding their teeth! It is so eerie!
Reply:ask your dentition for a gum shield.
Reply:do you do it during the day as well? if your just setting there, like right now, ready this... are your teeth together? if so, get in the habit of holding your lips together but teeth apart! Once you have mastered this you may not clench at night (worked for me) if it doesnt work get a mouth guard from the dentist or even a football mouthguard from the store

also - try a relaxation tape b4 bed

good luck
Reply:You need to go to your dentist and get them to make you a splint. They have to take an impression and send this to the lab.

It is made out of hard plastic and you wear it at night, it will prevent you from getting a sore jaw, and damaging your teeth.

If you are in the UK you cannot get this on the NHS and so you will be charged a private fee.

Reply:Get a mouthguard from the drugstore or the dentist can fit u with one. Wear it at night and MAYBE in the morning and it can "retrain" your mouth. U are sore cuz ur jaw muscles are exerting so much energy when grinding. A mouthguard stops the contact from ur top and bottom teeth. Wear it or it'll cause ur teeth to move, get worn down, chip, crack and lead to chronic sore jaw.
Reply:I herd this can be stress? are you stressed?
Reply:Well after trying a tooth guard and medication, I just had botox injections 2 days ago. This is supposed to weaken the muscles so you dont clench so much. Still got a couple of days to go to see if the work, but flippin 'eck they hurt! like getting socked in the jaw. So speak to your dentist and get something done before it gets as bad ad mine!

How do you stop grinding your teeth while asleep?
they have these night guard things they are like retainers and you put them in while your sleeping so you cant grind
Reply:You can go to a drugstore or to you r doctor and request the stressgard. You have to learn to relax your jaw and reduce the harmful effect commonly associates with bruxism. Also, you need to stop stressing yourself. I think you need a stress relief management. Three R's. (Relax, Release, and related)
Reply:put a sock in it.
Reply:I had excellent results with hypnosis to put a stop to my night grinding. Look in the phone book for Certified Hypnotherapists and ask them for references but it's very safe and not really very expensive at all. For me it took only two sessions.
Reply:A nightguard is great.

If you can't seem to find a good size nightguard, or it feels funny. contact a doctor or dentist. sometimes they can carry nightguards that can be fitted and formed to fit your teeth and mouth.
Reply:the dentist can make u a night guard to fit ur teeth. that would be best b/c grinding can really screw up ur teeth.
