There are a number of causes, from tensions in the neck and jaw (physical) to emotional states.
The best way to minimise damage is to see your dentists and get a dental shield that you can wear at night. In extreme cases grinding can cause teeth to crack, so it's worth doing.
Once you've made sure your teeth won't get damaged, you can ask your dentist to check out any physical causes and refer you to a specialist if necessary. If there's no physical cause you might want to look into some kind of stress relief, but eliminate the physical causes first as they're the most common.
How can i stop from grinding my teeth in my sleep? Anyone know what causes one to do it?
i have been grinding my teeth for years...i recently got porcellin veneers done and at my consultation i was informed that i had the problem.my husband used to wake me nightly to get me to stop grinding my teeth.i had to purchase a night guard,it works great hard to get used to but worth it.for me stress was the cause of my doing it.you'll definatly need a guard.they cost around 500 dollars and you could need more then one a year, mine was covered by insurance.good luck.
Reply:my sister grinds her teeth in her sleep and the dentist gave her a retainer to wear while asleep...as yours about one!
Reply:If you can't get the splint like me. Go to the sporting goods store and get one of the teeth guards the football players use and it will help just as well.

What is the cause of grinding the teeth during sleep.whats the medical term for that?
Bruxism,
What Is Bruxism?
Bruxism is the medical term for the grinding of teeth or the clenching of jaws, especially during deep sleep or while under stress. It comes from the Greek word "brychein," which means to gnash the teeth. Three out of every 10 kids will grind or clench, experts say, with the highest incidence in children under 5.
What Causes Bruxism?
Though studies have been done, no one knows why bruxism happens. But in some cases, children may grind because the top and bottom teeth aren't aligned properly. Others do it as a response to pain, such as an earache or teething. Kids might grind their teeth as a way to ease the pain, just as they might rub a sore muscle. Most kids outgrow these fairly common causes for grinding.

Reply:It's called Bruxism. The link below gives some reasons for this. Some old wise tales say it's caused by stress.
Reply:The medical name for teeth grinding in your sleep is bruxism. The cause of it is usually stress related. Other causes include jaw misalignment (occlusal discrepancy) and it can be a side effect some anti-depressant medication, although some anti-depressives can help stop teeth grinding.

If someone is constantly grinding their teeth?
while awake and claking thier jaws together what could cause it? this guy also twitches alot.
If someone is constantly grinding their teeth?
could be tourettes.
Reply:jaw out of line?
My daughter needed braces. The ortho said it caused her to grind her teeth and make her jaw click. My son actually ground down his teeth and had to have them built up with metal.Luckily these were his baby teeth and it's over with now.
Reply:I grind my teeth constantly all through the day.
It wears my teeth down slightly, says my dentist, but otherwise not an issue.
Reply:This can be a sigh of stress, especially in men, when it occurs while sleeping. I have only seen it once when this guy was awake. This could lead to jaw problems.
Reply:The "clacking" is the sides of the jaw. Grinding comes along with this.
He should be wearing a mouth piece to bed in the evening. Prevents the grinding.
His jaw should be looked at by a dentist. Can't remember what causes the clacking.
Reply:usually stress or anxiety. sometimes its just habit to grind your teeth, ie when asleep watching tv or concentrating.

How can I stop grinding my teeth?
Such a thing is psychologically generated. Psychotherapy will help you.
How can I stop grinding my teeth?
If you grind during the day, which many people do even though they may not know it, set a timer for every hour %26amp; when it goes off check to make sure you are not clinching your teeth. For nighttime..........the dentist can make you an appliance to wear, but you can also buy one at your nearest pharmacy. You just wear it on your lower teeth %26amp; sleep in it %26amp; it keeps your teeth from grinding together.
Reply:You can buy retainer-like things that prevent. Just ask your dentist for one. Also you can try googling it to see if they have anything else.
(Your dental insurance should cover the cost since grinding is bad)
Good luck!
Reply:A dentist can give you a plastic thing that's about as big as a molar that fits over your back tooth. It really works.
Reply:Well if you go to the dentist they usually give you a prescription for a guard to go in your mouth so you stop grinding your teeth. However, these are very expensive. I actually went to my local drugstore and picked up one of those guards that go in your mouth for sports (You know...like what the boxers use...LOL!)
It was inexpensive and works great.
Reply:I am not sure how to stop but if you get gaurds and wear them when you start grinding your teeth it will help you to not mess up your teath!
Hope this helps!

Why have i been grinding my teeth so badly lately?
i only know i am, because my jaw hurts. it's kinda sore.

idk, i've been a little sttressed, but not as bad as before. and this is a new problem for me.
1)why do i do this?
2) how do i stop? i don't really wanna tell my mom b/c she'll just say your getting braces soon and it'll stop then. typical mom-type responce
Why have i been grinding my teeth so badly lately?
I have this problem, the scientific term for which is bruxism. While one's natural jaw alignment is sure to be a factor, I find that there is a very positive link between my stress level and my grinding my teeth. I highly doubt braces will solve the problem. In fact, my sister got braces and they didn't do anything to make her stop grinding. It had once gotten so bad that the dentist told her she was grinding her teeth flat.
The best solution for this problem is to get fitted with a night guard. it won't necessarily make you stop grinding your teeth; however, it will prevent you from damaging your teeth. What's more, you don't have to use it every night; only when you are so stressed that you feel you are liable to grind. Another thing to do is to listen to relaxation tapes before you go to bed at night. The dentist advised my sister to listen to "nature sounds" for 15 minutes before going to bed. This helped her problem considerably. In the same vein, you never want to lie down for sleep and just pass out. This indicates that you are exhausted. If you go to bed exhausted, the likelihood that you will grind your teeth will shoot way up. This is one strategy I employed to treat my problem. It helped.
Good luck in your efforts to overcome your manage your bruxism. It's good that you are tackling this problem early.

How do you stop grinding your teeth at night?
Get one of those "Night Guard" mouth trays and use it when you sleep at night. That's what helped my son stop grinding when he was younger. I got it from a catalog for like $50, then a couple of years later I saw the same thing at Wal-Mart for under $20. It really works. He only used it for about 2 yrs. He's 15 now and no signs of grinding!
How do you stop grinding your teeth at night?
No idea. I'm 57, have full dentures so no teeth in at night, and still grind away even though nothing is hitting anything else!
Have your dentist fit you with a mouthguard, similar to an athletic mouthguard, to protect your teeth from the grinding.

How can i stop grinding my teeth?
Bruxism- teeth grinding
Grinding your teeth at night regularly, or bruxism, can be a very annoying habit, and have some serious consequences. Recent studies have shown that it can lead to teeth aches, chronic headaches, consistent jaw pains, and even the crumbling of your teeth. Here are some ways that can help you overcome this:
The mouth guard:
Many people have had success with a mouth guard recommended by their doctor. It's worth a try, but it can be uncomfortable and tiring to always wear that when going to sleep.
Get rid of the caffeine:
Cut back or avoid any food or drink that contains caffeine. Studies show that when people reduce their caffeine intake, the teeth grinding decreases.
Reduce alcohol consumption:
Teeth grinding can get much worse after drinking alcohol. If you drink, make sure you keep it in moderation, and drink a lot of water before going to sleep. That will reduce the intensity and the chances of grinding your teeth.
Stop chewing gum:
Chewing gum can train your jaw and your jaw muscles to clench and move in the same manner as during teeth grinding. It can make it more likely to occur. Bruxism causes your jaw to move a certain way, thus causing the teeth to grinding against one another, so it's best not to incite your jaw to do this like it does with gum.
More water:
As mentioned above with the alcohol, drinking a lot of water can help reduce bruxism. This is because dehydration has been linked to bruxism, and drinking plenty of water can counter that.
Reduce your stress:
More likely than not, bruxism and teeth grinding are related to a mental issue. Stress and anxiety can increase your chances to grind your teeth. Therefore, it would be beneficial to try to rid your existence of the stress, by doing things such as stress counseling, exercising, yoga, etc
How can i stop grinding my teeth?
If you are consciously aware that you grind your teeth you can train yourself to stop the moment you notice. However many people (myself included) grind their teeth at night, so in that case you'd need to get an appliance fitted by your dentist or orthodontist.
Reply:You can buy mouthguards at your local drugstore that help prevent you from grinding. They're a bit pricey though... around $50 or $60.
Reply:To stop it at night, ask your dentist for a protection plate to sleep with.
To stop it during the day, practice massages: from your temples down to the sides of your jaw. It relaxes those muscles, and after a couple of weeks the grinding will be rare.
Reply:I had to go to the dentist and get some silicone mouth guards to put in my mouth at night. In the day I have to make a conscience effort not to do it.
Reply:Buy a month guard before you ruin your teeth.
