How can i stop grinding my teeth during the night?

To stop bruxism (teeth grinding) :





The dentist can fabricate a bite splint that would be worn at night, during the grinding of the teeth.





Reducing stress.





Reducing foods that contain caffeine, such as coffee, chocolate, or soft drinks.





Avoiding chewing on objects that are not food, for example, a pencil.





Stopping ourselves from grinding the teeth when becoming aware of it, if it happens during the day.





Relaxing the chewing muscles in the evening, by applying a wet and warm cloth to the face, in front of the ears.

i do that too the only way to protect ur teeth is get a sheild from a chemist. u can't actually stop urself grinding ur teeth at night
Reply:Speak to your dentist....I'm sure you can get special plastic braces to cover your teeth
Reply:My girlfriend has this problem. She went to her dentist and got a grinding gaurd. Consult your dentist I'm sure they have a solution

Reply:My daughter has this problem. She was prescribed Xanex so she would relax over night. She also has a mouth guard which you can be purchase at any drug store.

Reply:Your dentist can fit you with a night guard that is just for this purpose. You can get them over the counter but they will not fit you as well as the one the dentist will give you, so if you find the OTC one is uncomfortable if you should go that route..don't give up the idea of going to see your dentist.

Reply:I'm going to be different from everyone that's answered so far. It may be something as simple as a case of threadworms. When I was a child this was a well known symptom of having them. You should be able to get something over the counter at your chemist and you may just find the grinding stops.

This is called BRUXISM, you can:





massage the muscles over the backof the jaw, the ones that go hard when you tense your jaw, or you can get the guard the others have been suggesting. If there is stress, deal with that first if you can to reduce the impact of the grinding.

The usual treatment for this condition (bruxism) is for you to wear a soft plastic splint over your teeth at night. This appliance is made by a dental/maxillo facial technician on a plaster cast of your teeth.


The causes of night grinding are many e.g Stress, chewing problems, over large dentures or restorations (fillings), it is best for you to seek help from your local dentist who will examine your mouth and if necessary make an appointment for you with a specialist who has maxillo- facial qualifications. These specialists are often to be found in Dental Hospitals or large general hospitals.
Reply:I had this problem and ended up going for a mouth guard fitting at the dentists.





I've used gum shields when playing rugby for years, the types that you immerse in boiling water for a few seconds shake dry and then put on your top teeth bite and suck but having tried these first they are too bulky and do not fit nearly as well as one you get from the dentist.





They take a mould of your teeth in a sort of gel and you come back about a week later and try the mouth guard. I've had mine for a year or so now, it still fits very well is considerably smaller then a sports mouth guard and sits happily stuck to the roof of my mouth at night preventing the grinding.





When I started using it I immediately noticed the jaw pain stopped and curiously I have not needed another filling since, so I am guessing that the grinding was degrading the fillings and reducing their life.





The only problem with it is that it does collect tartar so it need a good old brushing and leaving in a cup of diet coke one in a while.





I'd 100% recommend getting one straight away, you aren't going to be able to reduce / remove the stress that may be causing you to grind straight away and a gum shield will only mask the caused but it works perfectly
Reply:There is a special appliance called a night guard that you can have made at your dentist it cost around £50 you were it every night it wont stop you griding your teeth but it will stop anymore damage to your teeth. If your griding your teeth that is normally cause by stress try to relax or address the issues that are causing you stress.
Reply:Get a cheap mouthguard/gum shield from your local sports shop. Just say it's for Hockey ^^
