This is perfectly normal. Its caused from having a soft TMJ (its still forming). Its not at all comparible to adults, who call it bruxism and is due to things like stress. You may start to notice "wear" on his teeth. Which you can see the teeth going down due to the grinding. But a child's "pulp" in his tooth shrinks when the tooth is grinded down. Which means there is no cause for concern. Although an adults pulp does not shrink and gets sensitive. Basically, this is very common and no need for concern, until he gets his permanent teeth. It just sounds really bad!
Why is my 17 month old grinding his teeth?
Many thanks to mikeysmom. It really helped me to have this new behavior normalized by an informed individual. Report It
Reply:mine did this,too....i just told her it was "icky" and made yucky faces for about a week and she stopped...although sometimes they will do it in their sleep! good luck to ya!
Reply:Isn't it annoying? I think they all go through that phase. My daughter was around that age when she started doing that. I would just constantly tell her to stop until one day she just decided to stop on her own. I think it's a kid thing and eventually he'll get over it. It's annoying and makes you cringe though!!
Reply:win i did it mom gave me apple suse you
should try that maby apple butter will work two dont know
Reply:My son went through the same thing, it is a new sound! And it relieve's pressure on the teeth when they are getting new teeth. Try to divert his attention with a frozen teething ring, or a wet frozen washcloth that he can chew on, also a frozen carrot or freezies. He will grow out of it I'm sure, my son did.
Reply:my daughter started doing that at about the same age and she still does(apparently so do i according to hubby) my daughter is 4 now i don't think she will ever stop.
