Is there really any "cure" or at least tips to stop grinding my teeth?

I grind my teeth at night due to anxiety I was experiencing a while back. Well, my anxiety is gone, but I still grind my teeth at night and clentch my jaw during the day without noticing. I know I need to get a night gaurd to prevent any teeth damage, but I want to stop this all together; any suggestions?

Is there really any "cure" or at least tips to stop grinding my teeth?
What you need is a nightguard. You need to visit a dentist or a dental college and have a custom made nightguard made. Custom made to your mouth is the best. You wear it every night to protect your teeth. If that is too expensive visit a dental hygiene college clinic and have a "athletic mouthguard" made. It is pretty much the exact same thing as made in a private dental office as a nightguard. Dont tell them you want it to wear at night. Pretend you want it for a sport.

Visit www.ada.org for local dental and dental hygiene colleges in your state.

In mass athletic mouthguards are made at dental hygiene schools for about 10 dollars.
Reply:Go to Walmart. Sports section. Get a football player tooth guard (they're like 97 cents). Put it on at night..

Works great! And much less spendy then the dentist.
Reply:The night guard should help. Any way you might still be stressed about stuff? Try something to help you relax before bed. a bath, a cup of sleepy tea, something that you like to do to relax.
Reply:It's called an occlusal guard- the inexpensive ones are widely available at drug stores and chain retailers-

if that doesn't help you should see your dentist who will make a custom one for you. ((more expensive!))
Reply:i grind my teeth to at night, but im afraid of choking on a mouth guardl ol
Reply:You could try a mouth guard.
Reply:maybe a dentist could reccomend you an appliance (discreet) for at night and during the day which you remove whenever but it just protects those pearly whites :)

My 21 month old son keeps grinding his teeth. Does this mean he is lacking something or what?

Someone told me that when a child grinds his teeth he is lacking some kind of nutrition and i just cant see to figure out what it could be. Is this true or is there another reason he is doing this?

My 21 month old son keeps grinding his teeth. Does this mean he is lacking something or what?
Why it happens

Teeth grinding, technically known as bruxism, is a common nighttime habit in many babies. About 50 percent of all infants will grind their teeth before their first birthday. This behavior usually starts around 10 months, when your child's front teeth — two on the top and two on the bottom — have come in. Some babies grind their teeth all night long, while others do it off and on.

What you can do about it

Some babies will stop grinding their teeth if they sleep on their side. If that doesn't work, don't worry. The sound may be nerve-racking for you, but the grinding won't hurt your baby's teeth and he'll outgrow this habit eventually. A low-key approach is best; making a big deal out of the behavior may only encourage the grinding.
Reply:check your child's mouth for new teeth. this is often the only sign that they are beginning to poke thru the gums. relax, it's normal. if you are not convinced, ask his dentist.
Reply:If he keeps it up, take him to a dentist. I had to wear a mouth guard when I was little because I would grind my teeth all night long. It's not a horrible problem but if he does it consistently for a long period of time it can wear down his teeth to a point that it can become an issue. He'll probably grow out of it though. I only do it now when I've had a really stressful day.
Reply:My son use to grind his teeth. I never heard that it could be that he was lacking some kind of nutrition. I ask him pedi. doctor and he asked if my child was stressed or did anyone in my family grind there teeth. I answered no to the first question. Come to find out that on my side of the family my sisters grind there teeth and my husband and his mother have been grinding their teeth in there sleep. So from what I can conclude is that I would believe for my son it runs in the family. He no longer does it. But if your that concerns as I was just take him to his pedi. doctor and see what advise he or she may have for you. I hope I help out in some way . Good Luck.
Reply:I asked my dentist and he said it was stress. My 3 yr old did it when I had a new baby. Good luck.

Without using a night gaurd, is there any way to cure "grinding teeth during the night" (nocturnal bruxism)?

yep, i already know that night gaurds for the teeth help you somewhat with preventing damage to the teeth and the gums, but is there any other way to cure bruxism (getting rid of it completely, not just adjusting to the symptoms)?

Without using a night gaurd, is there any way to cure "grinding teeth during the night" (nocturnal bruxism)?
try having a cup of Kava Kava tea or tablets before retiring.

it relaxes muscles and removes tension.
Reply:I saw a physical therapist about my chronic jaw pain, and I think that bruxism is hard to cure. I know that I am more likely to grind my teeth if I am stressed, so perhaps some relaxation exercises before bed. Also, he taught me massages to do on my face and in my mouth to relax the muscles. This site seems to describe them well: http://www.massagebyheather.com/self-mas...
Reply:Take them out--like I do. lol

Sorry, Just had to say that. I used to have the same problem--but not anymore. Don't have an answer for you.
Reply:One way of stopping the damage and severity of grinding and clenching is through the making of a repositioning splint. A repositioning splint looks like the traditional night guard but has certain functions built into it. This device not only protects your teeth when you do grind but in addition, it reduces your urge to grind.

Damaged teeth can be repaired by replacing the worn natural crown of the tooth with an artificial crown. Materials used to make crowns vary; some are less prone to breaking than others, and can last longer. Porcelain fused to metal crowns may be used in the anterior (front) of the mouth, and in the posterior (back) gold is the preferred material. All porcelain crowns are now becoming more and more common and work well for both anterior and posterior restorations. To protect the new crowns, and dental implants an occlusional guard may be fabricated to wear at night.
Reply:Biofeedback.

How can i prevent myself from grinding my teeth and what can i do to protect my already worn down teeth?

i keep knocking my teeth together out of habbit and i think i grind them at night aswel.

How can i prevent myself from grinding my teeth and what can i do to protect my already worn down teeth?
Go to the dentist and get a guard for your mouth to wear at night. You don't want to have no enamel on your teeth. It's good that you know you grind at night. Now you can do something to protect your teeth.
Reply:You can buy a mouth guard at a pharmacy and it prevents you from grinding your teeth at night. I have the same problem. For the teeth that you have alreday worn down- a dentist will have to fix that.
Reply:get yourself a bite guard. You can get one custom fitted by a dentist, or you can get one at a sporting goods store that is generic, but it will do the job.
Reply:Don't Grind your teeth
Reply:Your dentist can make a night guard for you. I have one and now I can't sleep without it, even though I don't grind my teeth as much anymore.
Reply:i do the same thing! i got fitted for a mouthguard by my dentist which i wear at night. it's not inexpensive but it does the trick.

hope this helps!
Reply:buy a rubber gum sheild or for a better fit go to your dentist as he can make a gum sheild that will fit perfectly my husband had the same problem but he was getting headaches by doing this but the gum shield really helped
Reply:The make this thing its called a nite guard.Buy one and wear it during the nite and try it during the day maybee you will beable to break the habbit.
Reply:YOU CAN GO AND GET A MOUTH GUARD AT THE DRUG STORE....WEAR IT AT NIGHT, THAT IS PROBABLY WHEN YOU GRIND YOUR TEETH....IT REALLY WORKS....
Reply:Mouth guards will stop the damage to your teeth. They are uncomfortable and you might end up taking them out by accident through the night.

Try relaxation techniques before you go to bed. Maybe even having a shower will help. Calming music or a story tape might help you fall asleep peacefully. Through the day deliberately unclench your teeth and leave a little space between your uppers and lowers. All these techniques, and practicing them helped me to stop grinding and clenching my teeth through the night. Good luck to you.
Reply:get a mouthguard to wear at night
Reply:I have an occusal night guard. It stops me from grinding my teeth. It's awkward and I drool a lot, but it beats the heck out of grinding my teeth at night.

How do you prevent grinding your teeth in your sleep?

My boyfriend grinds his teeth in his sleep and it keeps me up alot. Now my 6 year old is starting to do the same thing, alot! What can I do for at least my son to keep him from doing this? Any suggestions helpful! Thanks!

How do you prevent grinding your teeth in your sleep?
Ask your dentist. They can custom make a retainer that is worn only at night and prevents teeth grinding which can cause serious dental and jaw problems if left untreated. Good luck!
Reply:Most drug stores (even Walmart) have these bit thingys that you can buy to help lessen the impact of teeth grinding (also known as bruxism). Not sure they make them for a child that young though. The dentists can also provide the person with a device that helps too. Besides being really icky sounds it can cause permanment damage to the teeth
Reply:There are retainers you can get from your dentists that are just for wearing during the night to prevent grinding.

Ask your dentist about this, they are not overly expensive.

Good luck, hope you can get some sleep!
Reply:Grinding teeth at night. Ummmm i don't know! Does he grind it alot?
Reply:Get help from the dentist, esp for your son. This can ruin teeth in growing kids. They can make you a bite guard for him to wear at night. Your boyfriend needs one too, but if he has damaged his teeth, it is already done.
Reply:You could go to the dentist and have a night guard made for them, its not to expensive and will save you so much money in the long run, do either of them complain of headaches?? It can save their teeth in the long run, because over time they will more then likely start to crack and break from them grinding in the night.
Reply:Your boyfriend can get a night guard from his dentist. Getting a night guard will stop the grinding from damaging his teeth. Your son is to young for a night guard, so, the only thing to do is observe. I work for a children's dentist and we see about 50 to 60 patients daily, and most of the children around your sons age grind their teeth. Some of the children grind their teeth down to the nerve, but because it's a slow process, most of the time, they have no symptoms.

How do I stop grinding my teeth at night?

I grind my teeth during the night when I am sleeping. What causes this and how do I treat it?

How do I stop grinding my teeth at night?
Grinding your teeth while alseep or awake is caused by stress. Sometimes your stress level is higher than other times, hence a sore jaw in the morning somedays and not others. See your dentist and if he/she feels that the symptoms warrant it, he/she will fabricate a bite splint (mouthguard) for you to wear while you sleep. Please do not just buy one at Wal-Mart and make it yourself. A bite splint can be billed to dental insurance if you have it and lasts for years. BTW, to answerer #1 - I would love to know what type of jaw disease your fiancee has. I can't imagine...
Reply:im not sure what causes it exactly, but i do know my fiance has a jaw disese that makes him grind his teeth at night. i know there have to be more causes than that though. i was jus giving you one example i know of. as for what you can do to stop it, i know they make these plasticy sort of gummy things you can put over your teeth at night, it doesnt stop the grinding it self but it stops the bad stuff from happening to your teeth. you may want to ask your dentist.
Reply:Go see a dentist and be fitted for a custom night guard.

Some people use tranquilizers, some people use hypnosis, some people have extensive jaw reconstruction to abate the bruxism (grinding).

Do not get a 'kit' for making one at home. The problem with the 'boil and bite' mouthguards is a simple one. Most people soften the mouthguard as directed and then bite down too hard, so that the upper and lower teeth are nearly touching or are touching and that defeats the whole point of the guard.

A good one will cost about $150.00. Fixing a cracked tooth will cost about $1000.00. You do the math.

Good luck but call your dentist before you do some real damage to your teeth.
Reply:well u cant stop it unless u buy a night guard mouth piece
Reply:Check out these....
Reply:I'm no dentist. And I know nothing about the causes, but they sell those things where you stick them on your teeth like dentures at night, and it stops your teeth from grinding. They sell it at Longs Drugs, Target, or Wal Mart.

Ive done it ever since i was like 3 and when I smile my jaws are uneven...(i only notice it but it kinda bothers me) and i dont want TMJ or my teeth to wear out...I mainly grind them in my sleep and when i wake up it takes me a few minutes to stop and my jaws feel very heavy...Thanks if you can help.

Please help me stop GRINDING MY TEETH!?
Your dentist can make a mouth guard for you to wear at night. It is simple to wear. My fiance wears one.
Reply:Go to your dentist and tell them you grind your teeth, they will make a night gaurd that specifically fits your mouth.

If you grind your teeth at night, you most likely grind it in the afternoon, but dont notice it. Try to notice and stop while your awake. Invest in a mouth gaurd at night, trust me I've seen really damaged teeth from grinding.
Reply:first see how it works go to like the sports store and but a sports guard they make them now and you can also go n the dental section they have this stuff there to try it out buy one guard and see how it works for you you can always have one done if you wake up with severe pain and headaches after wards you can always have a custume one made for you

Is it bad to grinding the teeth during sleep?

everynight i grind my teeth. Thanks for answers!!!

Is it bad to grinding the teeth during sleep?
yes-call your dentist-they can help
Reply:yea
Reply:Yes, it is. Over time, you will wear the enamel off of your back teeth and it will change your bite. You may have TMJ - Temporo Mandibular Joint Dysfunction. I have it myself and have to wear a night appliance to save my teeth from the grinding. See your dentist - you wouldn't be grinding without a reason. Good luck!
Reply:You need to get a nightguard to wear at night to prevent you destroying your teeth and hurting your jaws.
Reply:yes
Reply:Yes it is heavy wear and tear on your teeth talk to your dentist he may fit you with a night guard.
Reply:Yes, it's bad. First, grinding your teeth wears down the enamel which protect your teeth from cavities and disease. Second, the grinding motion causes a strain on the muscles and nerves going to your jaw. You will eventually develop TMJ, which I have from grinding my teeth.
Reply:Not good at all. Go see your dentist and get a bite plate, splint, mouth guard, or what ever you want to call it.
Reply:Yes its really bad. Google "grinding teeth sleeping" to get some immediate answers. There is a bunch of things you can do.
Reply:You can wear down your molars, irritate the ligaments that hold the teeth in place (in the jaw), cause muscle cramping, damage to the joints, and in really bad cases, fracture the teeth.

You should see your dentist; they can build you a prosthetic that will prevent you from grinding.
Reply:yes! and u DO NOT have to go to a dentist to fix it , they have like "football bit" things for ur mouth u use when u sleep! they work great! try rite-aid!!
Reply:Yes it can chip your tooth better get that checked with the dentist.
Reply:Yes, it is not healthy. Grinding the teeth can cause nerve damage and "kill" your teeth. It can also cause a degeneration of the jaw muscles, possibly culminating in what they call TMJ (Temporo-Mandibular Joint ) dis-function or in extreme cases lockjaw.
Reply:Yes, it is. I will slowly recede your top enamel.

I have this problem. I also in my past had braces and now I am required to where a plastic retainer. This helps because now I am only grinding the two pieces of plastic together and I tend to do it less.

Talk to your dentist and see what available options there are for you.

Here is are websites I came across. Check it out. One is on a product for people that grind their teeth.
Reply:Of course, it can give you terrible toothaches.(Believe me, I can relate)Like your 1st answerer said, go see your dentist, they are the ones who can help. They'll know what to do. Good luck!

Go to a dentist. They can make a "bite plane" to wear when you are sleeping.
Reply:HELLO,

TO ABSOLUTELY STOP GRINDING FOREVER YOU NEED TO GET AND WEAR AN NTI BRUXISM APPLIANCE.

A DENTIST MUST MAKE THIS FOR YOU. SEE THE LINK BELOW.
Reply:if you can stop for at least 15 days. i read that if you dont do a habit for 15 days, it wont be a habit anymore.

Why am I grinding my teeth?

I grind my teeth when I am awake - I don't know why? Only started doing it a year or so ago... anyone have any suggestions?

Why am I grinding my teeth?
This is called TMJ. Your dentist can fit you with a mouth guard or you can pick one up at a local drugstore. If a guard it not used you risk damaging your teeth good luck
Reply:its a force of habit
Reply:its a type of habit, or maybe it could be that u are getting irritated by something or someone....
Reply:youre cold
Reply:Involuntary grinding of the teeth is a major indication that you have intestinal parasites(worms) use some worm tablets and it should stop. try albendazole.
Reply:According to my experience,it's due to high tension(usually psychological).
Reply:stop taking drugs
Reply:It means that you are tense while sleeping, probably because of hyper-action in your dreams. Maybe unconsciously you have too many worries, hence the grinding.

You can ask your dentist for a prothese to put at night when going to bed.
Reply:It is called bruxism. Since you have just resently started it is probably stress related.

Although this habit is unintentional, oral health specialists often point to excessive stress and certain personality types as typical causes of bruxism. Bruxism often affects persons with nervous tension such as anger, pain, or frustration, and/or persons with aggressive, hurried, or overly competitive tendencies.
Reply:Almost everyone grinds or clenches his or her teeth at one time or another. But some people do this regularly (either when sleeping or when awake), which can cause headaches, stiff or painful jaw joints, and/or even permanent tooth damage, such as teeth that are worn down or flattened on the tips, chipped, or increasingly sensitive and/or have the enamel worn off. Medical types call this condition bruxism.

Traditionally, stress and malocclusion — the abnormal contact or alignment of the upper set of teeth with the lower set of teeth — were thought to be the major causes of bruxism, an explanation that many health care providers and dentists still stand by. On the other hand, some new research indicates that bruxism may be due mainly to neurological factors that are not yet understood. Because of the uncertainty about the underlying cause of bruxism, treatments vary from orthodontic devices (such as a night guard or other protective dental appliance) and stress reduction to drug therapy and biofeedback.

If you suspect your nighttime gnashing is causing any of the described symptoms, after an examination, a health care provider or dentist can help you explore treatment options to control your teeth grinding and any related problems.
Reply:because maybe you are nervous or anxious about something. i do it unconsciously sometimes, too, when i am really nervous.
Reply:you could be going through a lot of stress. if you jaw locks it is called TMD (temporal mandibular-joint disorder); the joint itself is called TMJ (temporal mandibular joint). but if all you have is a sore jaw and sensitive teeth, you are only grinding. go to the dentist and s/he will fabricate a soft or hard night guard (your best bet is a hard night guard!). the dentist will also recomend some relaxation techniques before going to bed, and if not, do some yoga, take a warm bath or have some chamamile tea about an hour before bed to relax you.
Reply:the main cause of that is Stress

but also it may be related to some systemic disease

really no real cause know to yet
Reply:Well, it would make perfectly good sense that it is caused from stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, a change in your life that is making you react that way. But, if you just started doing this and you do this during the day,.....

It could be that you are anemic. And if that's the case. It could be as simple as a better dose of iron supplements. Ask your doctor.

3 year old grinding her teeth....?

When my three year old sleeps she grinds her teeth and they are breaking and chiping. What can I do???

3 year old grinding her teeth....?
Honestly I would ask the dentist. I used to do the grinding all the time when I was young but mostly grew out of it. Mostly it was because I was nervous about something or I was being stressed out. Never have I broken or chipped a tooth though.
Reply:Teeth grinding is common process of growth, it is not in any way a health risk for young children. Report It

Reply:I would ask a dentist. My dentist told me not to worry about it. My daughter is 6 and still does it.
Reply:bring her to an orthodontic specialist. i've been grinding my teeth since young but not as bad as breaking my teeth. ( i only do it when i sleep)
Reply:my mom tells me that i used to teeth a lot because my teeth felt "itchy." have the toddler chew on something rubber and hard, like a rubber rattle or rubber animal. also, train it to eat munchy fruits and vegetables, such as celery, apples, carrots, etc. be sure that it drinks a lot of milk, as milk makes the teeth healthy and strong.
Reply:Have you told her doctor or dentist? they can help my 10 year old has done that all of his life!

Is there treatment for pain caused by grinding teeth besides analgesics?

Will mouth guards work? Will the pain eventually subside? My dentist verified that I don't have an abscess by x-ray. The pain radiates under my left eye and the roof of mouth as well as the surrounding teeth. I'm having trouble eating. I'm taking penicillin, too. Any suggestions?

Is there treatment for pain caused by grinding teeth besides analgesics?
If you are grinding your teeth at night you should show wear on your teeth. If your dentist is good he should be able to tell you the signs he sees of this wear. I have the same problem and woke up several years ago unable to open my mouth. I did not have much pain though but had to eat through a straw for some time and little by little I was able to open it. I have a top and bottom night gaurd that I switch off with. My dentist can clearly see the wear on these gaurds which are made of a hard material. I occasionally go in to have them adjusted due to wear. A good dentist who specializes in problems like this is really important. An orthadontist may be better at reading your teeth history than a dentist who does normal fillings and such. Your pain sounds a little unusual to me since I never had much pain. I hope there is not another problem that has been missed.
Reply:no
Reply:you should have a night guard - or your teeth will wear down.

find out what is causing stress, drink less coffee, meditate.....

there is no one answer to stop the bruxism
Reply:Possible eye exam is needed. I think I would start with sensodyne tooth paste. Look at stressers in life. Releave some. You have a merry Christmas. I was told to try mouth guards by my dentist years ago never did it. Toothpaste helped.
Reply:The only thing I can think of is a mouth guard. I have not had this experience, personally, but I know of a couple of people who have, and they said the guard helps.
Reply:You have what is called TMJ or temporomandibular joint disease-- you actually GRIND your teeth when you sleep and that causes you jaw to malalign and cause cracking and shooting pain.

Go to the dentist and get fitted with a special mouth piece to be worn while sleeping--- it will protect your teeth because eventually you will have worn out the enamel on them -- it will stop the joint pain jaw pain and the in your mouth and eye area--- TMJ xrays must be done at a regular hospital or outpatient clinic and should be ordered by your family doctor. I don't know why they have you on penicillin other than you may have bit you gum and it may get infected--- see your general doctor---get the tmj xrays--- talk to your regular doctor about a serious formal plan to get rid of this pain..........good luck to you......ps- do you have your wisdom teeth? Ask your dentist-- an impacted wisdom tooth can cause havoc like you're having also.
Reply:Yes, mouth guards help with bruxism. I assume you've also seen a doctor or two to make sure there's no other cause for the pain.
Reply:Tranquillizers such as Vallium plus a night guard of suitable rigidity may help in your case.

Also check for sinus disease with an ENT specialist.
Reply:Your dentist should have taked an empression of your mouth. Then an appliance that fits your mouth will be made of a soft plastic like material . This appliance should be worn consistantly at night . You probably have stress in your day to day life that causes you grind your teeth at night. We all have some kind of stress and we use various ways to rid ourselves of it. Grinding ones teeth , clenching our teeth are symtoms. Try to find a way to calm yourself at night before you go to sleep. If you have no infection why are you taking penicillin? Perhaps change Doctors. Good Luck

How do I stop grinding my teeth without sleeping with a mouth guard?

I am ruining my teeth because I grind them in my sleep. I tried using my night guard and I wake up with my teeth hurting and feeling as though they've shifted. I need help!

How do I stop grinding my teeth without sleeping with a mouth guard?
I'd like to know what five minute procedure a dentist can do to stop a Bruxer? There are two type of Bruxers(grinders)

1. The type cuased by your teeth not touching the right way.

for example, a high spot on a new filling, or loss of contact due to decay, the bruxing is caused by your brain trying to re-establish an euquilibrium to your overall dental contacts(called occlusion)

2. CNS bruxers (Central Nervous System) the type of bruxing that comes from the brain can not be cured in five minutes. To solve this you treat the patient by using night guards. Try to stop the brain from activating the clenching by working out, yoga, therapy, and yes even drugs some times.

If you feel you are bruxing at night, are a CNS bruxer, and really don't want to wear a night guard then there little we can do to prevent the damage. Try relieving stress in some way.

Why is you don't want to wear a night guard?.

Perhaps you have an improperly made one?

Night guards need to be balanced out at time of delivery.

If all else fails.

Get a human night guard to stand by your bed and poke you

everytime you start to grind.
Reply:get all your teeth pulled, and wear false teeth....

so when you go to bed at night, just take out your teeth
Reply:Your dentist can resolve this. Quite often it's a simple 5 minute process.
Reply:if you find out let me know my wife does it too...
Reply:I really do not know how ... I have been grinding my teeth for 20 years.... some nites are better then others... i try to really relax before i try to sleep ... dont think of the stress of the day ... I had a mouth guard also and i just ended up grinding that down untill i got to my teeth .... good luck to ya!!!! :)
Reply:A trained massage therapist can do simple TMJ massage on and in your mouth to help with this problem. Call around to your local massage schools and get references.
Reply:Take a tranquilizer.
Reply:Try using a baby pacifier it is not a big as the mouth guard and will not cause your mouth to ache when you wake up.
Reply:well, I know it y feel w.rd bt you just have to were you retainer/mouth guard .
Reply:an alternative medicine approach....

Tension in the jaw can result in unconcscious teeth grinding. This is often from unresolved or repressed anger. Maybe looking into this might help.

The mouthguard isn't helping b/c its trying to treat a symptom, not the cause of the grinding. Your jaw is still clenching.

Maybe some relaxation excercises before bed might help. Meditation, soothing music, etc.

good luck
Reply:sounds like either you havn't worn your mouth guard for a while and so your teeth may have moved a bit since you last wore it... therefore it moves your teeth back to where they were when you first got it. Or, your mouth guard is not biting evenly on your opposing teeth and needs to be ground in a little bit to make all your teeth contact it evenly.

Other than that, grinding can be made worse with Stress, high fillings, so fix the stress and maybe that will help. Maybe if you chew on a sock :)
Reply:Don't use the store bought mouth guards but a professional one made my your dentist called a bite guard. The kind I have is hard acrylic the shape of my teeth and only fits on the top teeth.
Reply:try getting a mouth gaurd that's soft and not hard, then it won't hurt. you can get them at the orthodontist.
Reply:Hate to tell you there is NO chance of that happening. You might have TMJ.
Reply:Problem is, you can't entirely remove stress while waking. Psychotherapy itself causes stress. Nor can alternative inner mouth massages (??!??!) stop your teeth from grinding. And you won't stop the night grinding for two reasons:

1. You are not conscious and so how are you to even recognize and stop grinding movements?

2. All you need is one singular bad dream, or even an exciting one. That will cause stress and your teeth will grind away.

Get the occlusal guard. And if you grind that down (which I doubt you will), then simply replace it with another one.
Reply:You need to get your night guard adjusted. You may need a new one.

Try taking a multi-vitamin. If your calcium %26amp; magnesium levels are off, your muscles will tend to clench/spasm, causing more grinding.

1/2 the time it helps - but it takes some weeks to take effect.

It may or may not be TMJ, need to see a dentist who knows TMJ (sorry, most MD's don't).

Stress is often a major factor, so just relax! Yeah, easy for me to say. . .

So i would advise you to stay clam all day and think positive. If this grinding teeth won't stop try psychological sleep theapy or just stay awake all night??
Reply:When a person grinds their teeth it's either because their bite is out of alignment or due to stress. You can buy a night guard at the pharmacy or go to your dentist and have one specially made.
Reply:I do this too! I had a mouth guard fitted, you can get your dentist to do it, so I wear it at night. It doesn't stop you grinding, but it protects your teeth from damage and reduces the noise. To help you stop grinding, try and relax before you sleep.
Reply:i used to grind my teeth pretty bad when i was a nipper but i grew out of this so apart from sleeping with a sock in your mouth i think its one of those things you just 'stop' doing.

have you thought about using herbal remedies? things like lavender make you sleep more comfortably and deeply, this may help as if you fall into a better sleep you may not fidget and grind your teeth so much.

Reply:There are mouth guards they sell. My ex was too cheap to by one so he used his mouth peice from sports. I don't suggest that though...he was a looser. Go to a dentist and let them know what your problem is. Good luck and sweet dreams.
Reply:my grandma told me asks someone to use a slipper n slap on ur mouth while u're sleeping n grinding ur teeth.....its true, not teasing u..
Reply:You won't be able to stop it as you're asleep so you'll be doing it unconsciously !!!.

Go to the dentist and ask them to supply you with a bit or gumshield type item that you can simply put in your mouth before bedtime.

This will prevent your two rows of teeth from grinding together.
Reply:GO TO THE DENTIST AND ASK TO BE FITTED FOR A "BITE-PLANE" IT LOOKS LIKE A FOOTBALL MOUTHPIECE, JUST NOT AS BULKY. I WEAR ONE EVERY NIGHT AND SOMETIMES DURING THE DAY WHEN OVERLY STRESSED OR WHILE DRIVING LONG PERIODS OF TIME. I'VE BEEN USING ONE FOR ABOUT 8 YEARS NOW. I'M ON MY 5TH. IF YOU GET HEADACHES, IT WILL REALLY HELP WITH THAT TOO!
Reply:What is the Definition of Bruxism?

Bruxism is the habit of grinding the teeth together, typically at night.

Although the grating noise may be annoying for a spouse or sibling, teeth grinding is not something to become worried about.

top ^

Description of Bruxism

Contrary to popular belief, chronic teeth grinding will rarely wear down the teeth, nor does bruxism have a link to temporomandibular disorder (TMJ).

Bruxism is thought to be transmitted genetically and occurs in about 20 percent of people.

There is some evidence that emotional or physical stress can lead to nocturnal teeth grinding, which may be a way to relieve tension. People who exhibit temporary bruxism also toss and turn in their sleep, perspire heavily, and exhibit other symptoms typical of stress that are not specifically related to bruxism.

Early detection of this condition can prevent consequences such as headaches, muscle pain, temporomandibular joint dysfunction and permanent tooth damage.
Reply:you have TMJ probably, its a jaw problem. i have it too. if you mess up your teeth from grinding, insurance wont pay to have them fixed because its "preventable" by getting a mouthpiece. go to your dentist to get fitted for one.
Reply:take them out, or sleep with a table tennis ball in your mouth.
Reply:maybe try using a gum shield if nothing else it will protect your teeth
Reply:Check out TMJ.com the answer MY OPINIO gave you will find is not correct bruxism and TMJ are connected I should know have had and still having serious problems with this if you check out my questions you will see a gum guard will only protect your teeth and stop the noise not the damage it causes Good Luck

I keep grinding my teeth. How do I stop?

i'm trying to quit smoking and everytime I go without a cigarette I grind my teeth. how do I stop it or will it go away with time?

I keep grinding my teeth. How do I stop?
Chew gum during the day and get a mouth guard for the night. that's what I did. you can get some Cheap-ish mouth guards from a drug store.
Reply:chew some gum
Reply:where a mouthguard.
Reply:http://health.howstuffworks.com/how-to-s...
Reply:go to your dentsit. he'll give you a mouthgard to help you quit. that can hurt your teeth really bad and wear them down. its a nast habbit that needs to be stopped.
Reply:Go to the dentist and get fitted for a guard to put in mouth. They have some in dental dept. but going to the dentist would be better.
Reply:you should just make yourself stop

it will then go away in time
Reply:Ask you dentist for a splint. They really help, you may still grind but it won't cause any damage and the grinding intensity decreases.

~Good Luck with quitting!
Reply:First, I would quit smoking and then worry about grinding your teeth. Maybe grinding your teeth is how you're going to quit! (Some poeple use gum for example) once your finished, it should start to go away. Here's how to stop: put rubberband's around your wrists. You see, everytime you grind your teeth, you snap the rubberband, and (even though it might sting a bit) it helps and is effective. Good play (stopping smoking) it's a disgusting and hurtful habit, if I were you, I would rather grind my teeth then smoke. You're on your way, friend! :) (Please choose me for best answer!!!)
Reply:chew a whole pack of gum
Reply:eat cheese
Reply:umm u should lick a sucker
Reply:My dad used to do it too, so what he did was he would keep gum with him everywhere he went, and then during the night he would wear a mouth gard. By the way you idiot, why do you flippin smoke! You grind your teeth because you need your nicotine. Stop smoking, and one way is to chew gum. Just you have to TRY to stop.

Could i be grinding my teeth in my sleep?

i always have dreams where my teeth push together and it feels like they're going to shatter, it hurts so bad.

could this mean that i grind my teeth in my sleep?

Could i be grinding my teeth in my sleep?
Probably, though you may just be clenching them. Probably 99% of us do something like that while we're asleep. There are many symptoms...dreams of shattering teeth, teeth that come out and won't go back in, and other tooth damage related dreams. During waking you may notice a sore or tired jaw, sore teeth, teeth that feel like they don't line up right immediately upon waking but feel normal after 20 minutes or so, headaches, neck pain, cold or temperature sensitive teeth... Lots of different ways it can show up. It might not be a bother now, but usually symptoms will develop as the years go by. Most people can benefit from some kind of nightguard. Clenchers do best with the NTI-TSS.

Good luck
Reply:yes, its true my sister dos that when she is asleep, my sister plugs her nose so she can breath from her mouth, and that way she has to keep her mouth open so she cant grind her teeth.and it works.

good luck^_^
Reply:It very well could be the case. A dentist (tend to be periodontist) can evaluate you for tmj (temporomandibular joint syndrome) pain and fit you for a nite guard. They are usually pretty costly though well worth it if made properly. I have one myself and even went for physical therapy (with script from dentist) due to tmj pain. The therapist was trained in Rocobado(sp?) treatment which is one of the pioneers in treating those with tmj. If having pain and tightness, perhaps you can get a referral from a dentist for therapy of tmj and find out from the therapist if they treat a lot of patients with tmj and if they'd gone to Rocobado workshops. Please do not self-diagnose and steer clear from those over the counter nite guards as they are not custom fit for individual bites.

What causes grinding of the teeth?

I grind my teeth a lot and I have a mouthguard that a dentist gave me several years ago and told me to wear at night only. Now, I even grind my teeth during the day, should I wear the guard during the day as well?

What causes grinding of the teeth?
Yeah, go see a dentist. Honestly, if it is anxiety... a dentist probably could prescribe meds to see if it helps...rather than seeing your MD unless you are pretty certain it is something else. DDS have to prescribe anxiety meds bc of all the people who experience anxiety when going to the dentist. I would see your MD too if you have been taking drugs (particularly stimulants) or think you may have sleep apnea. These are less common reasons why people grind. If you lift weights, that can even cause you to grind. Good luck and hope you get the solution you are looking for.

PS Obviously if you are a day grinder.. you may be able to toss out a sleeping condition alone .. but you knew that.
Reply:Anxiety and Stress.
Reply:I grind my teeth due to stress and frustration. I do not wear a mouth guard during the day since the grinding tends to be worse at night.
Reply:You need to see your doc and dentist to find out what is causing you to grind your teeth during the day, Sounds like it might be anxiety but see the doc first and then the dentist.
Reply:YOu should get a new one!! I think they sell them in the store now!! You shouldn't grind because you'll have sores and problems!!
Reply:You should consider the fact that you may have parasites, not a pleasant thought I know, but it does cause grinding of the teeth
Reply:yes to protect your teeth.

go back to the doctor. have your doctor fit you a soft night guard and a hard bruxism splint to correct your grinding or bruxism.

Grinding my teeth durning the night?

When I sleep I always grind my teeth together, so now they have rough edges from all the chipping, and they are becoming transparent at the bottom because they are getting wasted away! What should I do?

Grinding my teeth durning the night?
Get yourself a nightguard. It a plastic thing that forms to your teeth and absorbs the shock of grinding your teeth. They cost about 37$ in pharmacies as opposed to 400$ in a dentists office (in Canada, anyways).
Reply:Actually they do form fit your teeth. The first time you get it you're supposed to boil it for few minutes and then put it in your mouth right away, and it forms an exact mould of your teeth =) Report It

Reply:get a night mouth guard
Reply:there usual is a reason for people doing this i started snoring since i started my work and i don't know whats going on OK so you should really go to your dentist to see what damage is done as they shouldn't become transparent..x

Sore jaw :S -grinding teeth?

Recently the far right side of jaw (where my ear is) is very sore!

When ever i bite down on something, a sharp pain occurs. My friend said that she had jaw problems and it was because she grindes her teeth at night while she's sleeping, and she wears this "mouth guard thing"? My parents also said it could be my wisdom teeth coming in, but i'm pretty sure it's not.

Anyone have the same problem?

maybe i should just go to the dentist : (

thanks.

Laurennnnn : )

Sore jaw :S -grinding teeth?
I had something that sounds like your problem. It turned out I had TMJ. That is a condition sometimes caused by grinding your teeth.

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD, TMJ or TMD), or TMJ syndrome, is an umbrella term covering acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the lower jaw to the skull. The disorder and resultant dysfunction can result in significant pain and impairment. Because the disorder transcends the boundaries between several health-care disciplines — in particular, dentistry, neurology, physical therapy, and psychology — there are a variety of quite different treatment approaches.

The temporomandibular joint is susceptible to many of the conditions that affect other joints in the body, including ankylosis, arthritis, trauma, dislocations, developmental anomalies, and neoplasia.

You can find out more information about this with an internet search for TMJ.

You should go to your dentist or doctor for a diagnosis.

Good Luck with this.

Can grinding/clenching your teeth cause bad headaches?

Last time I was at the dentist (about 6 weeks ago) he said that I clench and grind my teeth a lot. I've started a new job in the past 3 weeks which is very stressful, and I've been waking up sometimes in the middle of the night, sometimes in the morning with really bad headaches and my whole face seems to hurt.

Is it possible that the increased stress of the new job is causing me to grind my teeth more at night, which is causing the headaches? If so, what should I do about it? Although my dentist mentioned that I clench/grind my teeth, he didn't give me any advice on stopping it.

Can grinding/clenching your teeth cause bad headaches?
Stress can cause people to grind their teeth more. Clenching your jaw for long periods of time will make the muscles in your face hurt. It might be causing your headaches, but the stress can also give you headaches. There are over the counter remedies for nighttime grinding. They're generally sold in drugstores around the toothpaste and other things for your mouth. They're little pieces of plastic that you mold to your mouth and you use them at night. Also, try some relaxing techniques before you go to bed so you aren't so stressed. Drinking some herbal tea, listening to your favorite music, or doing yoga or breathing exercises should help you unwind, making you less stressed and less likely to grind your teeth.
Reply:It makes me have headaches...so I put a towel between my teeth so they won't touch and I stopped...or if you want to be more practical...ask your dentist for a retainer.
Reply:Yes - the condition you describe is also known as "tempormandibular joint syndrome" (TMJ) is well known to cause headaches. Many dentist recommend mouthpieces at night time - I have included a URL for your reference. I hope this helps. :)
Reply:Yes it can. The muscles are all stressed out and give you headaches. Try not to do it, as your mother would say.
Reply:yes. Go to the drug store and get a mouth peice. They have them over the counter now. Change dentists he is waiting for you to do more damage instead of helping you...$$$
Reply:Grinding/clenching does cause headaches, it happens to me all the time, I'm sure the stress from your job can be the cause, i cant really tell you how to solve the stress but until you can figure that out try a mouth guard http://www.dentalconcepts.com/html/night...
Reply:Definitely YES on all counts.
Reply:Yes, it sure can give you headaches and stress is a big factor. Go to the drug store or a walmart type store and go to the toothbrushes, floss, toothpaste, etc. section and you should be able to find a 'mouth guard' as described below. You wear it at night. It fits over your lower or upper teeth and forms to them. You hardly notice it in your mouth. That should help a lot.
Reply:Yes most definitely I have a headache right now from clenching. I have to get a retainer I get headaches all the time!! I clench so hard my molars hurt hence the name!!
Reply:Oh yeah, grinding and clenching your teeth can cause really bad headaches. Also they can bring on TMJ.

I didn't even know I was grinding my teeth until I broke a tooth and had to get my very first crown.

The dangers of grinding your teeth are: wearing away the enamal on your teeth and breaking your teeth. Also, you can develop TMJ which is a joint problem within your jaw.

My doctor ordered a nightguard to wear while I sleep. She took a mold of my teeth and the guard was created. It is bulky and awkward to wear, but I have gotten used to it.

I'm not sure why your dentist did not recommend this?

Stress is one of the key factors in grinding and clenching.

The stress in your job could certainly be contributing to this. I would try any and all ways to unwind when you get home. Take a warm bath, practice deep breath relaxation (CD's are available at most bookstores), meditation.

You need to relax. Your teeth are not the only thing that can suffer from excess stress---you can also develop high blood pressure.

Is there anyway that you can make the situation at work less stressful, or is it just a matter of time?

Good Luck and RELAX..
Reply:Yes, the increased stress can be causing you to clench and grind more resulting in facial muscle spasms, headaches and pain. You could try a "boil %26amp; bite" mouthguard available at most drug store chains. Ask the pharmacist if you don't see them in the dental area. It won't stop the behavior but will protect your teeth and may help with the muscle spasms. Taking ibuprofen or Aleve will help some. Call your dentist and ask for a custom appliance for your problem.
Reply:^Yes this can be caused by stress and it can cause headaches as well, your dentist can make you a mouth guard. I'm surprised he or she didn't mention it, from what I've read it might take time to get used to but it's better than grinding. I found the two sites below, so you can be more informed on your problem. Good luck, I hope this helps.
Reply:Yes it can. Ask your dentist again. Maybe your doctor or a pharmacist can suggest something.
Reply:Yes it does.

Most people do it as a habit,,sum people do it when they are in pain,,(U see this alot with chronic pain suffers),,i

when u grind ur teeth it can lead to T.M.J.

this is a condition dentist can help u over come.Tmj,or tmd,,they changed its medical name,,can cause jaw pain, headaches and make eyes seem sensitive to light..

Grinding teeth for a long period can cause ur teeth to wear down and cause tmj,,thats when ur jaw bone cushion,,is wore down or out of line,in some cases to fix the problem ur teeth may have to be pulled and replaced with a plate to help adjust ur jaw so it wount cause pressure and make headaches, jaw pain even dizzy spells can be a result of it..

More or less if u feel u need help contact a local dentist who knows about tmj.Maybe ask if they can give u a mouth piece for the grinding,,they claim a good mouth piece can help u stop,,oh,and chewing gum isnt a safe alternative..i ask my dentist,he stated it can cause headaches and lead to tmj.
Reply:Your dentist should be able to make a teeth guard that you wear over night which will stop you damaging your teeth. The best way to cure you problem is at the cause and not the result. Your job is the problem try and find a more sedate job that will probably give you less damage to your body in general
Reply:In additional to some good suggestions about mouthpieces and relaxation techniques, you should, depending on the type of stress, seek some sort of stress therapy. Are you being bullied, or is the stress the result of deadlines, etc.? The answer to this question depends on what relaxation method you should use.

As a temporary anti-stresser, you could use an infusion of lavender essential oil (pure). Go to a chemist or a health food shop to buy the oil and infusers. This will put you in a deep sleep. Try not to do it every night for a long period of time, or its efficacy will wane as you get accustomed to it.
Reply:Yes, it can give you headaches. I am an ex-dental nurse but I grind my teeth as well! Mine started last year when my Mum was ill, so any stress will definitely be a contributing factor. If you only grind them at night, you can ask your dentist to arrange to have a night guard made for you. They will take an impression of your teeth and send it off to have a small device made for you to wear at night while you sleep so that your teeth don't meet and you can't grind them. If you find you are clenching or grinding during the day, just try to be aware of when you are doing it; this is how I reduce clenching my teeth during the day. As often as I could, I would think about if I was doing it, and whenever I was I would stop. Good luck, as soon as you settle into your job you should notice an improvement.
Reply:Yes you are absolutely right, there is a definite correlation between grinding, clenching and some headches. You have already arrived at the diagnosis.

The treatment :

-hot packs over the TMJ

-massage the muscles around your TMJ

these two help in milder cases.

-Night splints- Preferably something low profile like Sussex splints made of Essix 0.4 material as you can wear the upper or lower one during the day and both at night and during severe episodes wear both during the day as well. This helps to open up the joint and taking the pressure off of it. Allowing it to heal. The last option is anti-anxiety medication.

Good Luck

Grinding teeth is causing damage to retainer?

i didn't know i grinded my teeth until now.

but anyways i've had my retainer for about a month now and how can i not cause any damage to it?

any tips on how i can stop the damage to my retainer?

anything besides a mouth-guard or is that the only option?

Grinding teeth is causing damage to retainer?
ask your ortho
Reply:I suggest you ask your dentist for the safest option.
Reply:Teeth grinding is called bruxism in medical parlance. Read this:
Reply:I would suggest asking your orthodontist to make you a night guard intead of the retainer. It will serve both purposes for you by retaining the teeth and protecting them too. I can't think of anything you could use to protect your retainer unless you wore a soft night guard on the other arch......but thats a lot in your mouth.
Reply:at least its not damaging your teeth when you wear the retainer. Are you worried about the replacement cost?

Sleeping with a mouth guard is pretty hard.

I would agree with nancy that wearing a splint instead, which is kind of like a hard mouth guard which prevents damage to your teeth from grinding would be an option. If it was made for the teeth you are trying to retain, it could retain them as well.
Reply:Where your retainer during the day instead of at night. If you are using a wire retainer ask if you can use a slipcover retainer instead.

Grinding teeth?

Hey,

I always grinded my teeth and my jaws were really sore

I got the gum shield thing and it was so much better

but now i have braces

and my jaws are killing me again!

What can i do?

Grinding teeth?
It seems to depend on why you're grinding your teeth. If it's a bite issue, that should be solved when your braces have done their job.

In the mean time, you can:

1. Open your mouth wide and massage both jaw joints, located near your ears.

2. Do some light exercise before sleeping to alleviate stress.

Hope this helps.
Reply:You're welcome! Happy New Year. Report It

Reply:It may be time to investigate WHY you grind your teeth. I grind my teeth in my sleep and have braces, but recently found out that I do it as a reaction to an allergy.
Reply:A quick fix would be to go to your local store and grab a sport mouth guard. Heat it in some warm water and bite into a few times to help customize it to your teeth-- that will help it fit more comfortably. Also use Ibuprofen and heat packs to help with the discomfort.

Grinding teeth . dentist gum shield advised?

went for check up and dentist asked if i grinded my teeth. Yes i do in my sleep and when i wake up i find my jaw stiff. She said she is going to make a impression of my teeth for a night teeth sheild. minumum level one price £50. cant i get one myself from somewhere else for cheaper? I bet i will just leave it on the bed side table near my PSP i cant afford!

Grinding teeth . dentist gum shield advised?
It sounds like you have a very thorough dentist which really is a good thing. The gum shield needs to be made specifically for you so I am afraid there is no way to get one cheaper. Grinding your teeth can be damaging to your teeth and can cause headaches because of the constant grinding and tension. You should get one if your dentist has advised this.
Reply:i had one of these, but it was free on the NHS, why do you have to pay for it ?

It is better to care for your health
Reply:yes go to the chemist and buy a cheep tooth whitening system where you have to make your own bleaching impression tray in the kit and just wear this at night its exactly the same thing just a rubber shield in the shape of your teeth but you only need to wear it on the top set to stop you grinding.
Reply:my son got his free on NHS see if your dentist will let you pay in instalments

Stick it in hot water, bite it and you have saved £40.

Any decent sports store.

Reply:I got one for free when I was active duty AF. First off is that they have to pure some sort of plaster of paris in your mouth to get the molds. Gags something terrible! Bottom line is that I never use the "custom casted shields" the dentist made for me! You would be better off going to a sporting goods store and purchasing a mouth guard used in football! Like five bucks max, no gagging, and costs about 200 percent less than the shield option!
Reply:Hello, while I do understand that you want to get a night guard to help deal with your gritting and grinding issue, let me suggest that you also get involved with dealing with what's causing your gritting and grinding. The gritting and grinding is the outward symptom that relates to something going on inside you emotionally and we call that Stress. When you are faced with what ever issue is triggering your stress, your physical reaction is to grit and grind. Stress is generated by one or a combination of the following six areas: Money, Marriage, Health, Sex, Employment and Self Esteem. Here's a couple of examples of stress triggering, you get up and it's time to go to work, you may not be happy with your work environment and you begin to wish you had some where else to go, those feelings can trigger stress reactions. Or, lets say you learned that your Mom or best friend has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, your health isn't on the line, but your emotionally attached to this person and that can trigger stress...What I'm saying is that you may or may not have a personal involvement in one of the six areas but are emotionally attached to someone who is.Then again, you may be very personally involved in one or more of the six areas. In any event they are very unlikely to go away on their own..if that were so you wouldn't be gritting and grinding now.

So how do you deal with the Stress?, you get professional help. You see a professional counselor and he or she will help you identify the area that's stressing you, if you don't already know, and he or she will guide you through learning what you can do to solve the stress issues. It's amazing how many people have serious stress and don't know where it's coming from or how to deal with it. I once had a lady patient come in to my dental office with obvious stress and had no idea where it was coming from. One look at her mouth and I immediately knew she had serious stress issues. I referred her to a psychologist friend and at the end of two months of counseling she came into my office and announced that her stress would be solved in exactly ten day's., I asked how she could pin point the time frame, she responded, "that's when I file the divorce papers."...Turned out she had been seriously verbally abused for some 15 years and had now found the courage to solve the problem through counseling....Anyway, mouth guards are pretty much the same cost wise no matter where you go. My concern is that you will rely on the mouth guard and not deal with why you are needing it. Life's way to short to live with unnecessary Stress. Good luck and I wish you well.

What can I do if I currently have braces, but I also experience teeth grinding (bruxism) at night?

can the dentist design as mouthguard though I have braces? is bruxism common with braces? I just got braces 4 months ago... Please answer if you have experienced this or you if have knowledge of what I speak of...

What can I do if I currently have braces, but I also experience teeth grinding (bruxism) at night?
Bruxism is caused by inner body disturbances. Most common reason is parasitic worms. A large number of hookworms and pinworms cause teeth grinding. You should go see a doctor. Multiple cestodes or tapeworms are also a cause of bruxism. It is possible to have all three. You should go see you nearest doctor IMMEDIATELY!
Reply:for me...my orthodontist gave me a mouthguard...its wide enoung to go around the braces. If your ortodontics do not give out mouthguard, go out and look for a wide one that you think would fit.

Should i wear a night guard made by a dentist for teeth grinding even if it doesn't fit anymore??

no you should go and make another set that fit.

Should i wear a night guard made by a dentist for teeth grinding even if it doesn't fit anymore??
I don't see the pont, if it doesn't fit anymore. You need a new one I think. Check with your dentist though.
Reply:The answer to that is pretty obvious. If it doesn't fit, it could do more harm than good.
Reply:you should definitely go to your dentist and have him make you one so that it fits
Reply:You should go to see your dentist to find out what is the reason for the night guard no longer fitting. Sometimes the reason is obvious. For example, you accidentally stepped on it or you washed it in boiling water.

Other times, the reason is not so apparent. Your dentist will help you to verify whether: (1) the night guard is bent out of shape or (2) your teeth and gum have changed.

If the night guard is the cause, then have a new one made. Wearing ill-fitted appliance in the mouth can cause painful oral lesions (for examples, erythematous macules and erosion or inflammatory hyperplastic lesions), which may require surgical intervention to correct.

If your teeth or the surrounding gum and bone have changed, then you need to "stabilize" this alteration first prior to making a new night guard. Common causes for such change include periodontal disease, dental abscess, and oral tumor (benign or malignant).

Regardless, the bottom line is, the night guard is no longer "guarding" and protecting your teeth when it is not fitted to your mouth properly. It is better not to have one than to have a bad one in your mouth!

You can buy night guards at the drug store. They are pretty cheap and work well.
Reply:If your dentist has an in-house lab they can be made in one day. If they have to send them out, it could take a week or more.

What is the fastest and easiest treatment for bruxism or teeth grinding?

see your dentist and get a "bite plate". They work great and you have immediate relief. But it is only a temporary fix not a cure. But it will prevent you wearing down your teeth(like mine did). If you have insurance they pay most of it.

Other commercial bite plate may not fit properly and cause more wearing of your teeth or gum tissue as well as cause of suffixation by cutting off you airway while you sleep.

I had one made and I like it a lot. I have crappy insurance and had to pay quite a bit but it was worth it.

Hope this helps, good luck.

What is the fastest and easiest treatment for bruxism or teeth grinding?
Go to the dentist and have a form made that keeps the back teeth from being able to meet; also sometimes works for tension headaches.
Reply:A custom made night guard prescribed by a dentist. This is a quick fix, but may not address the underlying problem.

If your grinding is caused by poor occlusion (how your teeth come together), you might benefit from braces or other reconstruction.

Night guards run from $300 to $500 in the US.
Reply:I'm a dentist.

An occlusal guard. Fast, easy, simple, painless, TOTALLY non-invasive and TOTALLY reversible.

Patients cringe when I tell them that the fee for one is $400. They last for years, and help prevent much more serious (and more expensive) problems from occurring.
Reply:it is a really bad habit to grind your teeth. i started when i was 6 and didn't stop until i turned 8 or so. it wore down my back teeth SO much. i had to get serious fillings. there is no easy way to stop, but i would suggest fiddling with something like a worry stone. i know it's not the same at all, but you need to stop. my family helped me out a lot on this, try to get your friends to help you stop too.

Does anyone have a dental night guard, it is for teeth grinding at night. Do you wear it and does it work?

Yes, I have a night guard for grinding %26amp; it's helped lots!! I have fewer headaches and the muscles in my jaw aren't sore as much.

you can go to www.stopbruxing.com they have some great deals on night guards. Report It

Reply:I have used one and it does work, but my mouth would water a lot with it in and then I would wake up all congested from it and therefore wouldn't get a good nights sleep.
Reply:I just got my night guard about a week ago. My periodontist said that the salivating is beacuse your body thinks it's food and that with time, it will reduce and go away. I've already has periodontal surgery several times and the guard is reducing the stress in my mouth to hopefully prevent the need for aother surgery. I sound like I'm a teen with braces, and I drool a bit, but that's a small price to pay to keep my teeth.

Why do certain noises make us cringe such as teeth grinding? What is it that offends our senses so?

My great - uncle, as a child could not stand the noise of someone biting into an apple. Do you know of any other noises that make us cringe stories?

Fingernails against a chalkboard
Reply:The squeaking of a fork against a plate. And another one is broken chalk against a blackboard!!
Reply:i've been wondering what the reason for these things is for years! whenever i touch certain hard fabrics like kakhi or when i think about licking velvet..sounds ridiculous, but thats what makes me cringe and gives me those uncomfortable goosebumps. i'd really like to know the cause, and why is it different for everyone?
Reply:I read somewhere, that apparently, this is beceause the noises are similar to primate communication calls which is some sort of warning call, and the sound triggers an atavistic response based on our genetic memory of the ancient ones.

don't know how true that is though!!
Reply:gnashing of teeth....scratching bare finger nails on the board hmmm i can't think of anything else

Is buying a night gaurd just as good for teeth grinding/clenching as having an appliance made at the dentists?

because right now I can't afford an $850 mouth piece....

Is buying a night gaurd just as good for teeth grinding/clenching as having an appliance made at the dentists?
A sports guard will do just as well until you are able to get a night guard custom fabricated. The difference is that the sports guard is soft and can be ground through thus having to be replaced more often. The night guard your DDS makes is soft on the inside and hard on the outside so it lasts longer and is custom fabricated to your teeth so it is not so bulky or uncomfortable. Either one is good just make sure you are compliant as you can break your teeth over years of clenching and grinding. Good luck!

Help! What is the best way to save my teeth from tooth-grinding?

I've tried to use mouthpiece but it is not comfortable. I can't take this awful practice. Help!

Help! What is the best way to save my teeth from tooth-grinding?
Had the same problem. My dentist told me to use a night guard. He also said that it was due to being stressed out, and that was the truth. But now that I dont have as much stress in my life, I dont grind my teeth anymore either. Ask your dentist if there is anything else that he suggests using.
Reply:Dr.'s night guard
Reply:Ask your dentist for another solution.
Reply:Talk to your doctor or dentist. Surely there are other methods out there to subside the grinding. The mouthpiece is common but I can only imagine most uncomfortable.
Reply:football mouthpeice? yeah, they arent comfy. Get custom made ones at the dentist. they should cost a few hundred bucks, so dont loose them but theyll be more comfy. or at least they should be.
Reply:You need to see your dentist and get a mouth guard that is fitted for your mouth. It will make a difference. Otherwise there is nothing you can do, so you better change your attitude about them.
Reply:Go see a dentist. There are several alternatives besides a mouthguard. However, you can get used to a mouthguard. I know I have and I sleep just fine with mine. I buy the one that you heat in water and then form to your upper teeth. Any part that is uncomfortable, I slice off with scissors.

Does wearing a night/ mouth guard to prevent teeth grinding hurt?

Mouthguards made by a dentist to do not hurt and don't get in the way of your breathing if you happen to breathe through your mouth at night. Grinding your teeth and NOT using a mouth guard hurts. (Misread your question.) I grind my teeth and my uncle (a dentist) gave me one specially made for my mouth. I have cracks in my teeth because of the grinding. You can literally grind your teeth down to nothing if you never get a mouth guard. (My aunt did). The cracks make me more susceptible to cavities, plus, I could actually split my teeth beyond repair if the cracks get worse. Another thing to do is make sure you don't crunch down on ice or hard candy. They do the same kind of damage over time.

Does wearing a night/ mouth guard to prevent teeth grinding hurt?
No. It prevents the grinding though.
Reply:Will take some getting use to- will not hurt though.
Reply:No
Reply:it doesnt hurt, but it takes some getting used to.
Reply:Depends on the mouth guard. If you're using one from your dentist, one of those thin ones, then you should barely feel it. If it's one from a sports store that you have to boil yourself and stuff, then it won't hurt--you'll just have to get used to it. If it's uncomfortable, try trimming it down a bit and in the back. Don't worry, after a week, you won't even notice it's there. :)
Reply:No, it's like having 50 packs of half chewed bubble gum in your mouth. It's not bad, takes some time to get used to and shocks the heck out of someone that doesn't know about it and tries to kiss you!!!
Reply:Not as much as the grinding! You could start with one of the cheap ones that you buy at any store like Walmart to get an idea of what they feel like. If you can afford to get one custom made for you, it will be the most comfortable option and smaller than the ones made for the masses. I used one for a few years that was made for me and it didn't bother me at all.
Reply:They dont hurt but I couldnt get use to wearing one, after about a month I quit trying .Good luck to you.
Reply:doesnt hurt just have to get use to it its a little uncomfortable. till you get use to it. like the football players they get use to wearing it.

Does anyone know of a night guard for teeth grinding that ONLY covers the molars? Whether a one-pc unit or two

mine only covers my front teeth but forces a space between the molars so that they don't meet if i grind my teeth, so it protects all of my teeth. Your dentist could probably make a special one for you if needed- he had to make a mold of my teeth to get the correct fit.

good luck

Your best bet would ask your dentist...or someone who works in a dental lab.
Reply:You need one that covers your whole upper row of teeth. You don't just grind your molars. If your griding your molars you are grinding the rest of your teeth also.
Reply:There are several, including custom made and those available in the drug store.

Can you recommend something inexpensive for night teeth grinding?

There's nightguards they sell at the drugstore. There's ones you boil and mold to your teeth. Don't use a sports guard though. Some don't mold to your teeth or are soft which encourages grinding. The ones from your dentist are best but the drugstore ones are effective for me. I keep a few around and some for traveling. It has helped to prevent further damage to my teeth. Good luck!

Can you recommend something inexpensive for night teeth grinding?
You can purchase a mouth guard in any pharmacy or sporting goods store.
Reply:By a mouth guard. They make ones specifically to help decrease the impact caused by night teeth grinding.
Reply:It is a plastic piece you put in your mouth to keep you from grinding. It should be able to be picked up at any local Wal-mart

I need 6 crowns on my teeth. Worn them down because of tooth grinding.?

It's going to cost, according to my dentist, almost £2000. That's NHS prices. I'm thinking of Polish dentists or anything like that. Anybody had any experiences they'd be willing to share?

I need 6 crowns on my teeth. Worn them down because of tooth grinding.?
I have lived in Poland for the last two years and have used the Polish dentists. Two months ago my brother came to visit us and had his crowns and bridge work sorted. In the UK he was told to expect a bill for over £2000. He had the work done in Poland and is delighted with the results which cost just under £300. For my own experiences i have had two white fillings plus a sort off sand blast treatment ( heavy smoker) Total of 3 hours in the chair total cost was under £60.

If that had been UK i would have been in the chair ten minutes for £100 and got two silver fillings and no sand blast.

Cant speak highly enough of Polish dentistry

Hi again.

My dentist does not speak a word of English.

Fortunatley I speak Polish.

Will make enquiries for an English speaking dentist.
Reply:i'm in need of one crown for a back tooth. I know that each crown is very very expensive and some health insurances cover a portion of the cost. before you commit ask the dentist for before and after photos of actual patients so you can see their work, not all dentists do a good job with the cosmetic part of teeth. i wish i could help more good luck
Reply:I know a few people who do that, and I think they're all very stupid.

Not that this will help you, obviously, but since Yahoo seem intent on sending me violation notices for mild questions about cake preference, then bollocks to it, I will say whatever I want.
Reply:i dont know sorry
Reply:I've had a few of my teeth crowned or capped, and it is expensive but worth doing. They look great afterwards and won't wear down or decay again.

I really wouldn't like to comment about going abroad to have it done.

All I can say is it is worth doing for cosmetic purposes but don't let your dentist bully you in to having the less obvious ones done first - get them done as you can afford them, and get the most obvious, frontal ones done first. If they are not unsightly or giving you pain then it's not urgent, but still worth doing, one by one, gradually.

£2000 does sound like a lot of money I know, and it probably came as a shock to hear it all at once but think of the longer term. Your teeth are your teeth and you should look after them. You don't want to risk losing them altogether and then have the choice of either dentures or implants (which are about £2000 per tooth).

To the person who "strongly disagrees" with me, below:-

I did stress if it were for cosmetic reason and not causing pain.

However, dentists *do* bully people into getting the less obvious teeth done first, knowing they will have to keep up the treatment to get the teeth that matter to them done eventually. IT IS HOW THEY MAKE MORE MONEY OUT OF YOU.

As a private patient you can dictate what work you want done, so don't be lectured to by anyone - it's your teeth, your money and your choice.
Reply:I strongly disagree with the above participant.

Dentists usually suggest that patients do the back teeth first because these are much more important if you want to keep chewing comfortably for the rest of your life. Your looks won't be much good if you can only eat like a sparrow on your front teeth.

So, if you have a limited budget, and have to start one at a time, it will be generally better for you in the long term if you consolidate your back teeth first. There are exceptions of course, and everyone has to be assessed individually.

Tooth grinding leading to excessive wear is very unlikely - I would be asking if there are other factors like acidic drink intake e.g soft drinks, juices, sports drinks,...

If you are going to spend a lot of money, then your dentist should be able to suggest why you have reached this predicament, and what you can do to prevent it happening to other teeth.

Later... I am sorry to read more from Sean H above. Yes, unfortunately, there are dentists who will bully people, just like other occupations. It makes things hard for the honest dentists. Alternatively, there are some patients who don't listen to the advice that I give them, or have unrealistic expectations and expect miracles. Sometimes patients can be bullies too. That's fine, I simply tell that I don't think I'm the dentist for them, and suggest they find someone else. It's a 2-way street called co-operation, and I don't need aggro. I enjoy helping people with my skills - I'm not getting paid for Answers.
Reply:do you have a local dental hospital? sometimes they will do extensive work like this cheaper to allow the trainees get experience. they are FULLY supervised so it is safe! If you do get them done i suggest a mouth shield at night to prevent futher grinding problems,,. good luck
Reply:Most dentists don't make crowns on the NHS as its not worth their while. You can get them on the NHS but its a case of ringing around dentists in your area to see if they do them. The most you are allowed to pay on the NHS is £189.00 max. If your dentist told you its going to cost £2,000 on the NHS, hes a liar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That would be a private fee.
Reply:Don't know about getting crowns, but i hope you're gonna get a dental splint/plate made too or else you'll be wasting your money
Reply:my wife has it
Reply:NO,NO,NO!!!u should only have to pay the max fee which falls under the new contracts since april £189.00.she must have quoted u for private crowns!look it up on the net.

band 1(£15.50)

band 2(£42.40)

band 3(£189.00)this is the one u should fall under!!

hope this is helpful x
Reply:I had 4 crowns put in and 3 look and are great but one crown has always given me problems the Dentist did not sit the crown right and it's to expensive for me to have it redone-your best bet is like your doing check around some dentist prices vary depending on competition and location Do not go to a dental, clinic that is advertised 0n TV, i know some people who went to those kinds of clinics and had bad results, try a dentist that does aesthetics.
Reply:You shouldnt go for the cheapest just cos they are the cheapest cos you could get what you pay, cr@p work. You would have to look at why you need 6 crowns in the first place. And it is advisable if you sort out your tooth grinding first. Speak to your dentist about a nightguard
Reply:I am surprised that your dentist has not suggested that you have an overnight gum shield because this would help on more excessive wear 2 your teeth.

Have you not got a dental/optician plan like HSA which might cover some of it!

Depends on what part of mouth needs crowning, you can ask is there anything else they could do. Or get 2nd opinion.

How much does a "night guard" (for teeth grinding) cost?

i need an opinion especially from a dentist..but those who are "grinders" just like me will do..hope u can help me..im a "grinder"..probably due to stress.. :)

How much does a "night guard" (for teeth grinding) cost?
If you get them through the dentist they are probably exspensive, if you buy it at the Drug store or where ever they sell them i think they are around $20
Reply:The ones from the drug store can give you lock jaw if the fit is not correct. They are one size fits all. Mine was $400 from the dentist but it fits perfectly and will last 5 - 10 years. The ones from the drug store are softer and do not last that long. Report It

Reply:i dont know
Reply:I don't know how much they are but they can't cost that much. What can be costly however is the stress you are under. It can significantly shorten your life. I suggest your next question should be about how to reduce your level of stress.
Reply:I can tell you the price in Hong Kong.

HK$1650 for a soft one and about $4000 for a hard one.

Try a soft one first - easy to get on with and easy to replace.
Reply:I'm in the US Army. Mine was free. My jaw doesn't hurt anymore. See..there are benefits to being in the military.

Why are we such an unpatriotic country these days?
Reply:Mine is a hard one and cost $400. The ones in the store work but actually makes you "chew" more as they are soft. If you have loose teeth to begin with this one is not a good idea as while you are sleeping I was told by my Doctor's office you tend to chew on the night guard. There are different kinds too.
Reply:ABOUT $6-- You can get one at any grocery store or drugstore-- They resemble a boxers mouthpiece, and are by the dental floss on the toothpaste aisle. :)
Reply:If you go to a dentist it can cost about 200+ dollars. However you can buy it at any local drug store like CVS, Brooks pharmacy, Walgreens. If you buy a mouth guard there it is about 40 dollars more or less.
Reply:Cheapest way out is a mouthguard at a sports store.

Is there any cure for nighttime teeth grinding?

I have heard there are special braces you can buy but does anyone know something that can completely stop it? Thanks for your help in this matter.

Is there any cure for nighttime teeth grinding?
The answers you've received so far are quite accurate, and a mouth guard may be a quick and inexpensive solution (I kept spitting mine out in the middle of the night because it wasn't formed to my mouth).

But something else to think about is WHY you're grinding. For some people, it's TMJ. For some it's stress - are you under a lot of pressure right now? If so, hopefully you are working on a way to get rid of the stress; then the grinding stops on its own.

Or have you had dental work in the last few months, and perhaps your bite has changed? I'm working on this myself right now because I had a new crown installed, and it's just the tiniest bit higher than my other teeth, even though I've had several bite adjustments.

I'm a grinder too... and have clenched and ground my teeth hard enough to loosen a crown, and I actually cracked a tooth once, so I know what you're going through.

Good luck!!
Reply:You can get a mouth guard from your local sporting goods store, and it will help keep your teeth from being ground down. Bruxism (teeth grinding) is often due to TMJ disorder. The TMJ is the joint where your jaw is connected to the skull. See a chiropractor or dentist who specializes in TMJ.
Reply:The only thing I know of is a mouth piece that you sleep with. It is about $500 if you go to a dentist and they fit it specifically to your teeth. You can also go to CVS or Walgreens and they sell a generic one that you can try. It's a lot cheaper, like $10.
Reply:talk to your dentist
Reply:Sorry to tell u this but the only way to stop it is get a mouthgaurd like for sports.
