Am really fed up of my teeth grinding during the night. please help! are there any good gum guards in the uk?

Nocturnal bruxism is more common than you think. There's a couple of possible causes to this. It has always been believed that stress is linked to it and it the grinding does seem to worsen during times of high stress. The other cause may be that there is a bite discrepancy - it's hard to describe this in a short way- but in most people their bite is not perfect. Most people live with these discrepancies quite well but in some it can lead to grinding, muscle tenderness, tooth wear etc etc.

A short term solution is to get a mouthguard. Soft, flexible mouthguards can be purchased from sports shops but they're not really that good for sleeping in. A custom soft splint can be made by your dentist.

Alternatively a hard splint can be made - these are set to give you a balanced bite. The theory being that people don't grind once the bite discrepancies have gone. This can't be done with a soft splint. Again, ask your dentist if he can make you one of these. Some dentists have the training to do this, some don't.

Hope this was useful.

yeah there are my missus does this too, go to your local chemist
Reply:just go to any sports area in the store and buy a mouth guard like is used when you play football. It is practically the same as the ones drs make for you with grinding teeth and alot cheaper.
Reply:i've had the same problem. i havent found any good mouth guards they usually fall out during the night. Try relaxing your jaw muscles before bed and try messaging the outer part of you mouth. Try using an essential oil like lavender to help soothe. Grinding can be caused from stress, brunxism in which case you need to see a dentist. If continues it can end up shifting your teeth all around.
Reply:Just go online and order some, or find a Karate/Judo/Ruby shop and buy some frm their. Btw- instead of buying gum gards, why don't you ask ur dentist if there is anything u can do about it. Hope I've helped!
Reply:I Had it too! my solution, as given by my friend and from some newspaper article, drink a lukewarm cup of milk and take a bath with lukewarm water before u go to sleep! it worked for me...however, check witbh ur orthodontist because in my case, it was due to TMJ. goodluck! RELAX. some bruxism is caused by STRESS. forget that word and repeat to yourself: HAKUNA MATATA! (NO WORRIES!) ;)
Reply:I have the same problem myself.

Sore, sensitive teeth, gums, jaw, neck etc, all caused by the 'dreaded grinding'.

However, it is a big problem and causes all kinds of dental problems if left.

I found that any 'mouth guard' bought that I had not had properly fitted caused problems, including rubbing on the gum line causing bleeding/blisters etc, or ill-fittings and discomfort.

Therefore, it is more expensive but go to your dentist, they'll take a mould of your teeth and in a couple of weeks they'll fit the 'guard' for you to check its correct for your shape/size of mouth/teeth.

Hope that helps.
Reply:hi, go to the dentist and ask them to make a mould of your bottom teeth, they can make you a gum shield which fits over the teeth, I wear one, also i would get an xray as well as gridding your teeth can wear your cartlige in yor jaw, when your stressed yo do it more. I have a really big problem with gridding my teeth and jaw please sort it out by going to the dentist.
Reply:Your dentist can make you a splint which is a gum-shield made by a technician to fit your mouth, this is much better than buying them at a sports shop as they are all 1 size fits all, and the splint is made specifically for your mouth giving you a much better fit, you can have one made under the NHS for about 50 pounds or free if you are exempt.
