Is buying a night gaurd just as good for teeth grinding/clenching as having an appliance made at the dentists?

because right now I can't afford an $850 mouth piece....

A sports guard will do just as well until you are able to get a night guard custom fabricated. The difference is that the sports guard is soft and can be ground through thus having to be replaced more often. The night guard your DDS makes is soft on the inside and hard on the outside so it lasts longer and is custom fabricated to your teeth so it is not so bulky or uncomfortable. Either one is good just make sure you are compliant as you can break your teeth over years of clenching and grinding. Good luck!
