Why do certain noises make us cringe such as teeth grinding? What is it that offends our senses so?

My great - uncle, as a child could not stand the noise of someone biting into an apple. Do you know of any other noises that make us cringe stories?

Fingernails against a chalkboard
Reply:The squeaking of a fork against a plate. And another one is broken chalk against a blackboard!!
Reply:i've been wondering what the reason for these things is for years! whenever i touch certain hard fabrics like kakhi or when i think about licking velvet..sounds ridiculous, but thats what makes me cringe and gives me those uncomfortable goosebumps. i'd really like to know the cause, and why is it different for everyone?
Reply:I read somewhere, that apparently, this is beceause the noises are similar to primate communication calls which is some sort of warning call, and the sound triggers an atavistic response based on our genetic memory of the ancient ones.

don't know how true that is though!!
Reply:gnashing of teeth....scratching bare finger nails on the board hmmm i can't think of anything else
Reply:flys, nails on blackbord, the feel of a quilt without its cover on
