my 15 month old baby boy is griniding his teeth (he is still sort of teething, just waiting for most of his molars), and its super duper loud. it sounds like he is going to break them. 1) WHY does he do this? 2) WHAT can i do to make him stop it? 3) IS he going to break his teeth?
3-part question about babies grinding their teeth...?
It is normal for babies to grind their teeth while awake--they are simply getting used to the new sensations and sounds their teeth make. However, if the child does it for more than a few weeks to a month you may have a problem. The most common reason for children grinding their teeth for months on end is stress. Also, be sure to take him to a dentist and mention the grinding. At age 1 all children should see a dentist anyway.
Reply:i use to do that when i was sleeping
Reply:My 5 year old still does it, and you can hear it when he's in another room!
The doctor has told me that it's his way of dealing with frustration(my son has a global speech delay) since he can't communicate. I imagine it is the same way with your son...since he is only 15 months old.
One suggestion that was given to me by a Speech Therapist was to buy fish tank filter tubing and allow him to chew on that(it's very dense.. they can chew it and it won't break) instead of using his jaw and teeth.
My son has worn down his molars from his constant grinding(mind you, he does it 24/7)
Keep an eye on it, and watch when he is doing it.. is he trying to accomplish something and can't? Or does it look more habitual?
Good Luck to you
Reply:No he will not break his teeth, and this could be a sign that there is ear problems going on as well as teething, but really it is not much to worry about I would take him to the doctor and ask for the ears to be checked regardless of what the doctor may says. Other wise it is probably just pain from the teething and he is trying to deal with it the best way he can, you might try oregel as well.
