I just started grinding my teeth two weeks ago...how can I stop?

I didn't even notice I was doing it at first until my teeth started hurting. I think I'm doing it because of stress. Are there any tricks I can do to stop myself? It's only been going on for a couple of weeks. Or should I just go and see my dentist? (I just saw him for a cleaning/check up a couple months ago so I'm not due for an appointment for awhile.)

Try chewing sugar free gum, it'll distract your teeth.

If you do it at night, go to a dentist and have a plastic retainer (or tooth guard) made for your teeth. I also think they sell products to stop teeth grinding at night, but I wouldn't rely on something not designed for my teeth.
Reply:you could put in a mouth guard while you sleep
Reply:Youy can use these type of rubbery teeth guards
Reply:If you go to the dentist he will give you a mouth guard to wear at night. If you don't want to do that, I suggest gong to a therapist to work through the stress.

Reply:no just find sumthin else to do like bite ur nails cuz ur just gunna waste money for a dumb habit
Reply:I did the same thing and my dentist said that I had to just stop it. Every time that I caught myself doing it I would open my teeth slightly and hold it like that until I forgot about it. I wa getting headaches from it. I hope this helps you but if not maybe you could try a medication to reduce your stress. Nothing wrong with that either!!
Reply:I do it too, it sucks! It's hard to stop from stressing out - especially since people tend to grind most in their sleep. Your dentist will sell you a custom fit rubbery guard (runs from $100-500). A few department and grocery stores carry cheaper versions that you can mold yourself (runs from $15-45 and come in different base sizes).

There are also several online companies that specialize in this. Here is one:

or you can do a google search for "teeth night guard" to see several more.
Reply:I grind and clench my teeth too. It started causing TMJ pain and it got to the point where I could barely open my mouth because of the pain. The dentist gave me a night guard. Now you can buy one at any drug store but the one the dentist will give you is fitted to your teeth so it won't feel like you're about to play football. After a few months of sleeping with the night guard, I started sleeping without clenching my teeth. I've had to learn to catch myself and stop it. If I notice I'm starting to clench my teeth, I stick the tip of my tongue between my front teeth to keep from biting down. Good luck
Reply:This is a stress thing that wil not go away. You will probably not stop by yourself if you don't have someting else to replace the behavior with. Some sort of hand squeezing action is less damaging than tooth grinding. Get a rubber squeeze ball. That's not much help if you type all day, so try to find something that you can do when you are stressed to relieve that. It will get worse and soon you will wake u with headaches and a sore jaw.

Having a good partnership is a good thing to focus on. This is stress relieving.
Reply:I would go to the dentist because I actually have the same problem and have cracked my molars all the way in the back of my mouth and now I have a plastic little mouth gaurd (its not big at all it fits just right over my teeth) to keep my teeth from being damaged.
Reply:Have you recently started taking Klonopin or any of the -azepam family of drugs? Those can cause tightness in the jaw and teeth-grinding.
Reply:Your first move is to go to your dentist for immediate check up and medication. Then, you can apply prescribed medication such as OraMD to completely stop the problem.
Reply:Get a mouthgaurds.

It may eventually stop on it own.I used to gring my teeth but now i dont.
