Is there anything that a person could do for grinding teeth besides a bite guard and what causes it and how?
twenty percent of adults grind their teeth at night. Grinding (bruxism) can be caused by stress or an unconscious attempt to smooth out a poor bite. It wears down and may fracture teeth, and it can lead to gum and jaw problems.





Steps:


1. Make an appointment with your dentist, who will make a custom mouthpiece for you to wear at night. This will prevent further damage to your teeth and may reduce your tendency to grind.





2. Ask your dentist to file down your "high spots," which are any teeth that interfere with a comfortable, aligned bite.





3. Hold a warm, damp cloth next to your face for 10 minutes before you go to bed to help calm your jaw muscles.





4. Relax before bedtime by meditating, taking a hot bath or stretching.





5. Reduce alcohol and caffeine consumption.





6. Learn to reduce stress. Take stress management classes and learn relaxation techniques.

Reply:There's no particular reason people grind their teeth at night, it could be stress, it could be you have a poor bite due to teeth shifting or poor dental work. If you go to the dentist for a custom made nightguard, it will probably cost hundreds of dollars for a peice of plastic that cost .63 cents (I'm a dental technician). You may want to try the nightguards you can buy in a drugstore or WalMart or wherever first. If this doesn't help you probably will want to go for the nightguard from the dentist to get some relief. Most people wish they had gotten one sooner after they see what a big help it is.

Reply:The first step is to see your dentist and determine if the cause is related to your teeth. The splint(cheap piece of plastic....with a lot of thought and effort behind it lol)) will only protect your teeth from further damage if your grinding is stress-induced. Wearing the splint can help avoid excessive wearing of the teeth and the resulting collapse of your bite(this is extremely expensive to correct if it happens, so try and avoid it). It will also help to protect against fracturing the teeth(which can result in the need for a root-canal or even the loss of the tooth if the fracture is severe enough) Go ahead and try the "over-the-counter" mouthgaurds and see if it works for you...they're less than 5 bucks and its worth a try. Typically, patients find these bulky and funny-tasting and do not wear them. Remember, you want to actually sleep in the night, so wearing an appliance that you make at home which is intended for short-term protection during sporting activities might not work out too well...lol

ps-splints can work well in combination with a benzodiazipine(valium or zanax) or muscle relaxant(flexeryl) in the short term to provide immediate relief while allowing your muscles to return to their physiologically neutral position. Then your "bite" can be analyzed for deficiencies or interferences...in other words, see your dentist
Reply:A night guard is your best bet for grinding your teeth. They say 90% of the population grinds there teeth. Could be caused by a number of things stress, sinus problems, allergies, TMJ. Your best bet is to go to the dentist and find out if you have done any damage to your teeth by grinding the dentist will be able to tell you what kind of night guard is best a soft or hard one.
