Help! I am having a tough time stop grinding my teeth?

I've had this problem for at least 4 years. I wore a mouth piece but that didn't help because I cracked it, I was more tempted to grind with an object in my mouth. I catch myself grinding day and night especially when I'm thinking of something stressful at home or at work.I saw a psychologist, just said to relax and do activities I enjoy.

Help! I am having a tough time stop grinding my teeth?
You need to get a mouth plate again and wear it no matter what. You also probably need to take some relaxants at night to help you keep from grinding your teeth in your sleep until the habit is broken. You also need to think about it just before you go to sleep to help your brain remember not to grind in your sleep. Really think about it and try and the habit will be broken eventually. You will probably need to wear a mouth plate at night for a good long time :)
Reply:Sounds like you need to see another mental health practitioner. Not for drugs or anything, but for one thing to figure out why you're so stressed all the time, and for another thing to give you tools to help you relax. Besides that, you just have to be more concious about your grinding and stop yourself each time you catch yourself doing it.
Reply:I have the same problem and can not get rid of it....let me know when you figure it out. Don't feel bad ...when I get really stressed I bite my tounge when I sleep and when I wake up and realised I what I was doing my toungue is dry and sore and hurts for a while. Sorry I could not help.
Reply:Psychologist aside, if you continue to grind your teeth you will grind them down. Also this is a great way to develop TMJ problems later on. I think you need to become conscious during the day not to grind, and even though you broke your old mouth piece, I would suggest you get another. For the best products go and see a TMJ dentist before you really damage your teeth and jaw joint big time.
Reply:I ground my teeth at night, I had jaw pain. The Dentist gave me plastic guards to wear at night, one thin, one thick to choose from. My jaw pain ended. I rarely grind anymore, when I do, I put the guard in for a night, and no more pain. It was worth the money spent.

The guards are flexible, clear soft plastic, the are in the shape of the surface of your upper and lower teeth, the doctor made impressions. I choose the thin one, the thick one felt like a boulder in my mouth. They just fit in, and suction themselves to your teeth. They look a little like a tooth cleaning tray. You can't grind, the soft plastic won't let you. But my grinding was just at night when I slept, it wasn't aware of it until the dentist said he bet I was grinding and let's try this, and if the pain does not go away, we will do something else. He called my pain alleged TMJ pain. But if your grinding is when awake, maybe you need some different help. Maybe your dentist can help. Maybe you could wear the plastic ones in the daytime, too.
Reply:you have already done the right things

1) you need a new mouth guard-ask for a laminated mouth guard because they last longer and is more sturdy

2) consult a clinical psychologist and also the clinical psychologist needs to liase with the TMJ dentist
