Is grinding your teeth while you sleep bad?

never knew this, but my fiance' says igrind my teeth at night really bad too. what will happen if i don't do anything about it?

Is grinding your teeth while you sleep bad?
I've worn down my teeth and broken the tips/edges off.

There's a mouth piece that your dentist can fit you with or you can buy a generic mouthpiece Wal-Mart/K-Mart/Target, but they're really thick and uncomfortable to sleep with.
Reply:It's not good, moron.
Reply:Nothing, you will just continue to do this.
Reply:talk to your dentist and see about getting a guard for them for nightime
Reply:get a month guard
Reply:You can wear down your teeth eventually.

Causes pain in the teeth and gums.

Causes pain in the jaw.
Reply:yes, the dentist can make you special mouth pieces to wear while you sleep.
Reply:It will stuff ya teeth up. It also means you have worms.
Reply:Yes it is bad. Are you seriously asking this question at Yahoo?

Maybe a Dentist will pop in here and give you a definitive answer. (I doubt it)

There are bite plates you can wear when you sleep just for this disorder.
Reply:It is actually a sign of worms.
Reply:its not good..... go to the doctor......
Reply:You can have jaw problems and it can wear your teeth down. You can get a plastic guard to wear, talk to your dentist.
Reply:Eventually it will wear down your teeth. If you go to the dentist they will give you a mouth guard.
Reply:Yes, your teeth will eventually start to break down. Go to your dentist and get a mouth piece to use while sleeping.

From what I understand, they're not uncomfortable, and will definitely save your teeth.
Reply:This is a way your mind relieves stress. It is likely that you wake up with jaw pain (because of the stress) and get headaches often. It is not a good thing because you can grind away the enamel in your teeth. This can cause cavities and increased tooth sensitivity, amongst other things. If you got to your dentist and explain the problem, there is a guard he can give you to wear while you sleep.
Reply:Grinding your teeth is not good if long term it will create worn teeth, it can cause stress fractures-eventually breakage from the fractures-TMJ problems, headaches, earaches and so on. If persist a mouth guard made by your DDS can alleviate the problem. A newer small mouth guard is a NTI-not all DDS make them,so you might have to check around.
Reply:nothing good will come out of it. get a mouth guard and wear it when you sleep so that you dont mess up your teeth.
Reply:yes its bad....ikf you do nothing you will grind away the enamel off your teeth making them susceptible to cavities and cracking...you dont want that ...crowns are expensive. take care of your prob, go to the dentist, and he will provide you with little plastic trays that you slip on at night and take off in the morning!
Reply:Its a condition known as "BRUXISM".As you said in this condition patient has the tendency to grind his teeth alot during sleep...Well its not actually very harmful but it does cause problem to your teeth and to your muscles of jaw...

Excessive grinding of your teeth will result in a condition known as "TOOTH WEAR" in which your teeth wear off that means they will chip off slighty...it may not actually cause any problem but it will decrease the crown lenght of your teeth. On the other hand, after a few years it may cause slight sensitivity as the teeth chip off too much causing their surfaces to be slightly exposed.Which may result in you getting those teeth filled by a dentist...

and bruxism also with time(with years) may cause your facial muscles to be slightly tense(which would not be something really bad) but it may cause your muscles to be slightly stetched or tense(a condition known as TMD syndrome, that is,temporo-mandibular dysfunction syndrome)

bruxism is not anything which will harm your health and its treatment is also simple.A dentist will give you an appliance known as Night guard which will stop your teeth from grinding.you will have to wear it when sleeping.it will stop all these conditions.

what i told you may happen in severe conditions. If you get treatment it will cause no problem.bruxism is very common among people.who take too much stress. So relax and dont take your life very stressfully, it is not actually any disease but as i told you it may cause your teeth with advancing age to slightly chip off.so dont worry.just take an appointment with a dentist.it is quiet possible that your condition may be effectively and easily stopped.so get yourself checked by a dentist..
Reply:This is a sign of a TMJ disorder, I suffer from the same thing. I am currently going to my dentist and having my bite corrected with crowns and making my teeth longer. Alot of times this can be corrected this way but talk with you dentist. They will give you a splint or in other words a nite bite guard. This will either fit on your top or bottom arch and you wear it while you sleep to keep the pressure off of your teeth. If you ignore this problem you could break your teeth off or badly chip them. I also was unaware of my grinding until my husband said that I did badly. My dentist then asked me was i suffering from headaches daily or when you wake up your face hurts from clenching or grinding.
Reply:your teeth will crack and/or break which can be very painful. it can also affect your jaw. you should talk to you dentist about it.
