My 5 year old son grinds his teeth while he sleeps. He has been doing this he got his teeth.
I took him to the dentist who said not to worry about it and that he would grow out of this habit. This habit was due more to having a small mouth.
Have others had the same response or is there something I should be doing about this?
Thank you
5 year old grinding teeth?
You can try over the counter moldable mouth guards but its a difficult sell to a 5 year to keep them in at night. Other then that, there is really little else availible.
Reply:My daughter did this and she is now 12, she grew out of it, but because of her small mouth with most of her adult teeth now in she will need to start with orthodontic treatment
Reply:Hello,
I have been doing this for years. I know why I do it but noticed my oldest son doing this as well. There are teeth protectors at the store you fit it to your mouth.
Griding teeth causes headaches, teeth and gum damage and not very good sleep. Which as you know causes a very cranky kid. So you should be worried about this and hopefully your child grows out of it....I never had...
Reply:well im 18, and i do this while i sleep...more like clench my teeth...i was told to wear a mouthguard...but im not sure of anything else you could do...
Reply:My daughter has very small teeth and she is 6. The dentist said she grinds her teeth, probably at night but will most likely outgrow it. He said a lot of little kids do this.
Reply:Some kids do this because there are problems with fluid in their ears...See a doctor
Reply:DO NOT GET A BITE APPLIANCE MADE FOR A YOUNG CHILD!!!
I can not state emphatically enough that you should never, ever consider getting (or making) an appliance to stop tooth grinding in a young child. This would stop proper growth and development of the jaw where the appliance is worn.
It is my opinion that baby teeth are designed to be worn away as the jaws grow and develop. This allows for different growth rates and it allows for the accommodation of the permanent teeth with their much more pronounced cusp forms when they start to come in.
I agree with your dentist. This is just part of being a five year old.
