Grinding Teeth?

I grind my teeth a lot because I have anxiety. I don%26#039;t even notice I%26#039;m doing it. If I did, I would stop. The problem is: the pressure in my jaw goes up to my ear and I get really painful ear aches. Has anyone had a similar problem/do you know how to fix it?

Grinding Teeth?
A couple suggestions---

First, find and talk to a good dentist. I grind my teeth at night and didn%26#039;t realize it until my dentist told me. If you are grinding your teeth because of anxiety during the day, it%26#039;s possible that you are doing the same thing at night and might not know it. I actually didn%26#039;t believe my dentist at first! He made me a %26quot;bite splint%26quot; or a %26quot;night guard%26quot; that I wear at night. It%26#039;s wonderful, because I can stop myself from grinding my teeth during the day, but that%26#039;s a lost cause once I%26#039;m asleep.

But since it sounds like you grind your teeth during the day, you should try to stop. I know that chewing gum is supposed to be avoided by people who are prone to teeth-grinding, because it will get one used to that feeling of the jaw tensing up. Of course, the same thing occurs when one is eating, but I don%26#039;t hear people suggesting avoiding food. (Hehe, can you tell I like chewing gum and don%26#039;t want to quit? lol)

So far I%26#039;ve been trying to help you with the symptoms---but maybe it would help to look at the cause of your teeth grinding. You said it was from anxiety. Is there any way you could get help for that? Maybe find other ways to relieve your stress? If you have control over what is causing you anxiety, work on attacking that problem. If you have absolutely no control over what%26#039;s making you anxious, try to learn to let it go. This is coming from a self-proclaimed worrier, so I know that%26#039;s easier said than done! My teeth grinding started around the time when my mom was diagnosed with a brain tumor--so it made sense that I started grinding around the same time.

Dreams often allow a way for my subconscious mind to process the events of the day, so they are often stressful dreams. I%26#039;m working on lowering my stress level during the day, in the hopes that my dreams will be more peaceful and I%26#039;ll stop grinding my teeth at night. Until that happens though, I%26#039;m wearing my nightguard every night.

Hope to help a little!
Reply:I grind my teeth when I sleep too. I just went to the dentist and got a mouth guard. I use a different kind of mouth guard for sports too.

But DO NOT buy the ones %26quot;over the counter.%26quot; Those are bad for your teeth. Get one that%26#039;s custom designed for you.
Reply:you can be fitted for a splint at your dentist....or go the cheaper route and buy a mouth guard from an athletic store. that way when your teeth grind, they will slide over a smooth surface and not hurt your jaw.

either way....you should get this treated. if you don%26#039;t, it can lead to HORRIBLE jaw surgery....and you do NOT want that.
Reply:Chew Gum!
Reply:Go see a Dentist you need a night guard that will help!
Reply:My sister used to get incredibly painful head related aches from her grinding. She got a night mouth guard and that helped substantially. Call or go to your dentist - they%26#039;ll have the answer best for you!
Reply:get to a dentist and you;ll have to wear this retainer thing at night that prevents you from doing it. Your jaw may be in bad shape just get to a dentist and stop asking people on yahoo answers for these kind of questions.
Reply:Try to eliminate the cause of the stress, that is the best long term solution to the problem
Reply:If your ears are really bothering you and your known for being sick (constantly getting colds, ear infections etc.) that may be the cause. I used to grind my teeth when I was younger until my doctor put PE tubes in my ear, and had my tonsils and adnoids taken out and I stopped. I suggest going to an ENT (Ears Noise and Throat specialist) to rule any problems out, if they find nothing then go to the dentist to get a mouthguard.
Reply:I would say that there are three separate things going on . 1. your grinding 2. Anxiety and 3. The Other Cause of your problem.

It may be opposite of what you think - that is- you grind your teeth first and that produces cortisol the stress hormone -- which in turn causes a hormonal cascade of including the ones we call anxiety. The mind simply plugs in some handy excuses for how the hormones are feeling. Your brain is faster than your think !

That said you must also consider what you are actually doing at the moment you are grinding. For me it was driveing, a near head on every 6 weeks or so on this acess road near my house. I%26#039;d be fine until I got on that road. Try to listen to your thoughts. This is just simple meditation . That is just to break the loop. You have to break the loop somewhere to get any releif. It doesn%26#039;t matter what part of the physical mental hormonal loop you break.Inhale 7 second hold 4 seconds let out 7 seconds ... er heart beats. That will stop anxiety. prozac on the other hand is known for makeing people grind their teeth . Drugs cause deficiencies, Its in Adelle Davis. It%26#039;s worse than she said it was .

There are theories . One is that teeth are not aligned correctly and the irritation causes grinding. I started after haveing a root canal done in which the dentist left a spot of infection at the root of one molar. It comes and goes depending entirely on two things . The over all level of inflamation in my body and how well I%26#039;m doing with oral hygeine. POH Floss Tulsa OK , soda soft brush . Sit down take your time some time before your too tired to do it!

Germs are a decided factor in my dead tired from studying experience because they are highly inflamatory. As a cause of irritation . I have noticed that at some point the old tooth brush has to be tossed- 1 month or 2 . Because it scratces my gums and that irritation and pain the brush causes triggers grinding too! Wash the brush in soap to kill germs .

All this means some folks teeth are quite sensitive. I had many mercury fillings. Mercury stays in the tissues even after the fillings are removed . Mine were removed in the early 1980%26#039;s . I figure it took 25-30 years for my body to clear that mercury. I have still a mercury tatoo in my cheek lining. Legislation for informed consent in 6 states- its Going to be law and history . Enter into google search%26gt; Bernie + Mercury.

The head and jaw can throw the teeth out of alignment. You don%26#039;t want to sleep on your face !!! You%26#039;ll have a line down your face and mis-aligned jaw and teeth.

You should not log excessive hours at the PC with the jaw forward and neck extended. Do some yoga to straiten out. Dance is also good fun and banishes anxiety . Get the whole body lined up.

Lastly- heavy coffee addiction over say 30 years produces a big magnesium deficiency ( see Adelle Davis, Lets Get Well) . Magnesium deficiency is the number one suspect in tooth grinding .

So take Calcium 150mg. Magnesium 100 Mg. ratio 2:1 tablets.

Take them for 3 months at that dosage . If you dont stop after 3 months then some other cause is working- maybe malocclusion or arthritis or TMJ . Magnesium will also help prevent PMS the %26quot;other nervous wreck%26quot; part of magnesium deficiency. Its not a psych problem ! Always take it in the 2:1 ratio with calcium . They work together.

Parasites need to be mentioned as they cause deficiencies and inflamation . No medical works I have read mention this but I think it%26#039;s in Back to Eden that tooth grinding is a symptom of parasites . Pamoate is an OTC and costs 10$ , no side effects in adults or kids 100% safe.

Now about gum. It will prevent some of the wreckage. However theres a catch. Gum is coated with marble dust. Marble dust is highly abrasive and will actually damage the enamel to a great extent in just 1 year . In addition to that it%26#039;s calcium- like tums . This calcium intake is going to make the magnesium deficiency WORSE and cause the persons mineral balance to very haywire. So just realise that it%26#039;s a palliative fix and does not help one bit with the actual cause of the problem.

Lower the noise level in your house , driveing ect and see if that calms. I wear some ear plugs and that greatly reduces my nervousness.

Points

1. Dont take magnesium if you have kidney disease or diarrahea

2. Never more than 100 Mg. a day

3.Don%26#039;t take it for a prolonged time . Whats that? I%26#039;d say 8 mos to a year at any higher than normal dose. If you have magnesium deficiency symtoms!

4. These other vitimins too Pantothenic acid(B5) 50 Mg. Vitimin C 300 Mg ( Gee! I did not even mention how VERY important it is not to get sub clinical scurvy from not eating any fresh fruits or any plants. DUUH if you dont eat vitimin C your teeth are going... going... gone!...)

Iodine Use iodised salt. a little: 0.1 mg or 100 micrograms

magnesium take 0.7 Mg. per pound of body weight. 143 pound person takes not more than 100 Mg.!
