I have a 9 yr. old daughter who grinds her teeth at night. I%26#039;m concerned that it is a sign of stress. What can I/sh/we do to help?
9 yr. old girl grinding teeth. what to do?
I think you are right, that this is a sign of stress. Taking her to the dentist might reduce the damage done to her teeth, but it won%26#039;t help her with the stress. My son also gets stressed out, and shows it in different ways. Here%26#039;s what we do, we put on soothing music every night, in his room, before he goes to sleep. Then we talk about the good things from that day, and the bad things. Then we tell him to imagine that all of the things that bothered him that day are in a big bubble, and then we have him take a few deep breaths and tell him he%26#039;s blowing the bubble away. Then we tell him the bubble with all the troubles is gone, and tomorrow is a new day. If he%26#039;s really stressed, we may do a few more deep breaths, and tell him imagine he%26#039;s an ice cube melting, getting more relaxed and melty with each breath. Good luck!
Reply:You can try taking her to the dentist and finding out about getting a retainer that she can wear at night if that%26#039;s when the problem is. Not sure how they work payment but it%26#039;s a good idea.
Reply:I dont know about the stress thing but you should talk with her dentist about it. They have a mouthpiece which can help her to not get TMJ from the grinding and not damaging her teeth while she sleeps.
Reply:you can get these mouth pieces so she can wear them at night, so she won%26#039;t ruin her teeth, as far as helping her with stress, just talk to her about school, boys, her friends and weight issues, even if she is skinny, young girls still tend to be obsessed with weight, find out whats bothering her and take the proper steps to fix it, Good Luck♥
Reply:If you do not have dental coverage, like most Americans don%26#039;t!- My ex and my son grind. So did my ex%26#039;s father and his brother. I think it must be partically inherited or something too? But you can go to any sports store and buy a mouth guard. Make sure it fits comfortably.
My son wears his every night. He got used to it. When not in use, soaks in mouthwash. It HAS helped tremendously. Usually I end up having to replace it every 3 months. A LOT cheaper than going to dentist! Good luck.
Reply:Go To The Doctor... Fast
Reply:you can go to Walmart in the toothpaste section and get a tooth guard, I believe they%26#039;re called %26quot;Night Guards%26quot;. they are much more comfortable than the sports guards and they stay in your mouth better. they work for me! I grind my teeth whether I%26#039;m stressed or not, it%26#039;s just something I%26#039;ve done for years!! My dentist told me that without the night guard, i could wear my teeth down a lot faster and possibly even loosen them-no good! so good luck!
