Grinding my teeth?

lately i have been waking up at least 2-3 times in the middle of the night because of the tension i am putting on clamping down on my teeth. my wife said she actually heard me last night. what is the deal here and how can I stop this? i dont wake up sore but i can definitely feel my teeth have been grinding in some sort. someone tell what gives...

Grinding my teeth?
Bruxism (a clenching/grinding habit) is actually very common and is your body%26#039;s way of relieving stress. You may find that the frequency with which you do this ebbs and flows. Unfortunately, it can wreak havoc on your teeth and their supporting structures, not to mention your jaw joints. At the very least, you are wearing the enamel off the biting surface of your teeth and possibly causing small cracks to form. It%26#039;s possible that a tooth could crack deep enough that the nerve will start to die and you%26#039;ll need a root canal. Those are actually the %26quot;easy fixes%26quot;... treating worn out jaw joints is complicated and costly. I would recommend that you see a dentist and ask about a bite splint. It is a customized acrylic mouthguard that fits over the biting surface of your upper (or sometimes lower) teeth and will protect them from the forces you are inflicting on them at night. It is also adjusted to %26quot;even out your bite%26quot; to reduce jaw tenderness. Although if you are already experiencing problems with popping/clicking jaws or jaw joints that lock, I recommend you ask for a referral to an oral surgeon to evaluate the damage to your TMJs. I hope this helps! Before I became a dental hygienist I was not faithful about wearing the bite splint that my dentist recommended, and as a result I have needed 2 root canals on teeth that I%26#039;ve cracked due to my clenching habit. One of the teeth had a microscopic crack that extended into one of the roots and even after the $900 root canal, it had to be extracted!!! Not cool! In addition, I have jaw joints that pop and click and suffer from frequent headaches. Much better now that I wear the bite splint every night. I%26#039;ve tried to stop the habit to no avail... clenched down seems to be a natural state for many of us. Good luck!! (one more thing... custom bite splints can be costly, $400-500, and some insurances will pay a portion of it. If that is not feasible for you, there is an over the counter type that you can try in the dental section of Walmart. It%26#039;s quite a bit bulkier than the custom ones, but it%26#039;ll protect your teeth. If you try that one and start to experience jaw joint tenderness, stop using it and see your dentist.)
Reply:That grinding can give you headaches too!

The dentist can fit you with a device you can wear at night that should help.

Cut out all caffine drinks at night..that%26#039;s what worked for me.
Reply:U might want to check with your docter with that. I%26#039;ve heard that grindin%26#039; your teeth at night can chip your teeth or can cause tooth loss.
Reply:See your dentist if you can otherwise;

The mouth guard. You can now buy these over the counter at drug stores. I think it is called %26quot;Nite Guard%26quot;

Get rid of the caffeine. Cut back or avoid any food or drink that contains caffeine.

Reduce alcohol consumption. Teeth grinding can get much worse after drinking alcohol. If you drink, make sure you keep it in moderation, and drink a lot of water before going to sleep. That will reduce the intensity and the chances of grinding your teeth.

Stop chewing gum. Chewing gum can train your jaw and your jaw muscles to clench and move in the same manner as during teeth grinding. It can make it more likely to occur.

Dehydration has been linked to teeth grinding, and drinking plenty of water can counter that.

Reduce your stress. Stress and anxiety can increase your chances to grind your teeth.
Reply:My husband and I have the same problem. I got a mouthguard at the drugstore for about $20 and he got his specially fitted at the dentist for $500. His is better because it%26#039;s molded to his teeth. My grinding has caused my teeth to move forward and my husbands has caused chips and worn down. Good luck!
