Toddler grinding teeth?

My 18 month old grinds his teeth alot during the day and it is the most awful sound.Does anyone else%26#039;s children do this and do you know how to break the habit?Does it damage their teeth?

Toddler grinding teeth?
My 18 month old son has been doing this since he got two teeth to grind together. It%26#039;s the worst sound EVER it sounds like he%26#039;s chewing on rocks. My Dr. said not to make a big deal out of it for now, and he%26#039;s right, the more I try to tell my son %26quot;no no don%26#039;t do that!%26quot; the more he does, then he laughs at me! :) Stinker.

My Dr. said they normally grow otu of it and that it%26#039;s just a sensory exploration thing. Whatever. I just try to distract him when he starts it up. The Dr. also said that if it continues after his adult teeth come in, he can be fitted for mouth guards that will protect his teeth from wear.
Reply:My son used to do it all the time when he was about that age. Try giving him plastic teethers that have been chilled in the fridge. Or even a popsicle might help. My doctor said they do it because of their teeth. Good Luck!
Reply:my 16 month old grinds her teeth also. she likes the sound of it. i tell her no, no, don%26#039;t do that, so she has calmed down a lot. it is very annoying. it will eventually damage the teeth but that takes a while.
Reply:My son grinded his teeth. I didn%26#039;t know that he was doing it cause he always sucked on a pacifier, but when that was taken away, I noticed that he was doing it. I wish I could tell you how to stop it, but I have no idea. It went on for years and ended up ruining his teeth. He hasn%26#039;t had his 4 front teeth in about a year now. S
Reply:My 5 year old still does! It is hideous. I can%26#039;t stand to sleep in the same room with him. The dentist isn%26#039;t worried about it, yet. I asked him and he said don%26#039;t worry about it yet. I still do, because it drives ME crazy!
Reply:you know my daughter used to do that during the night and so i would put a mouth guard in her mouth. eventually she just stopped. But you may want to ask his pediatrician just to make sure.
Reply:My three year old daughter does it in her sleep and we can%26#039;t get her to stop. It has damaged the enamel on several of her teeth.
Reply:My 11 month old son grinds his teeth, too... I have no idea how to get him to stop it besides trying to keep him occupied. Sometimes we encourage him to chew on his teething rings or a cloth or blanket (he has a blanket that has a teething surface on it).

As far as it damaging their teeth, I%26#039;m not sure on that one either but I would imagine after lots of grinding it would do some damage but probably nothing to be concerned with.
