Grinding my teeth!!!! Help!!!?

A couple years ago I needed to have gum surgery due to the recession that was happening due to grinding my teeth. After the gums healed I need to get braces because my lower incisor was becoming mobile due to the grinding, recession etc. Since the braces came off I replaced 3 lower retainers (similar to invisiline) because I have worn holes through them!! I find myself throughout the day clenching my teeth or start to grind unconciously. I can no longer afford to replace my retainer due to no dental insurance and over 4,000 out of pocket expense for prior treatment. What can I do? When I%26#039;m not wearing my retainer (with holes worn through it) at night I wake my husband up with grinding, sounds like I%26#039;m chewing on rocks he says. I%26#039;ve also woke myself up from doing this. Has anyone ever lost teeth, or broken one, chipped one?

Grinding my teeth!!!! Help!!!?
Are you under a lot of stress? Stress will cause you to grind and grit teeth. I do when I%26#039;m under stress. I catch myself clenching my teeth together. Try destressing yourself with yoga or meditation. It helps but it doesn%26#039;t make it go completely away. A mouth guard is a good idea. The ones you get in the store won%26#039;t hurt. Once you get dental insurance again get on fitted just for you. It%26#039;s pricey but I would think it%26#039;s worth it. Also a electric tooth brush does wonders for your gums. Good luck and keep smiling.!
Reply:If you have trouble because you R grinding Your teeth do what I do and get a mouth gard
Reply:Mouth guards are available for a nominal cost at pharmacies all over.
Reply:I grind my teeth at night and the dentist made a night guard (similar to the retainer you described) for me...it helps so much. They make cheap ones you can buy at the store- I%26#039;ve seen them at Target. You can absolutely break teeth by grinding them, so you really need to protect them. Do you have TMJ? It%26#039;s a jaw disorder, I have it and it makes me grind my teeth. Google it and see if sounds like you...there are different exercises you can do to relax those muscles. Good luck!
Reply:Get a mouth guard. I usually get one like the football players use and follow the directions. They%26#039;re usually pretty inexpensive and if you follow the directions they work great. Of course I%26#039;ve never had to have gum surgery because of it. Nor have I woke myself up grinding.

Also, try to reduce your stress. I know it%26#039;s easier said than done, but I%26#039;ve learned that I grind more when I%26#039;m stressed than when my stress level is low.

Good Luck.
Reply:Are you near a university with a dental school? They usually offer inexpensive help and can have new ideas, too.

You may want to look into WHY you grind your teeth at night. I used to do this, too, gave myself lockjaw a couple times, too. I%26#039;m sure you%26#039;ve spoken to a doctor, but try talking to someone who can help you with issues of stress, muscle tension, show you how to relax your jaw muscles, etc. The thing is, even if you find a solution to the problem of grinding through things, you will still be wearing out your jaw, keeping your husband up at night , and interfering with your own sleep and relaxation. Stop during the day and do a mental check every so often to see if you%26#039;re tensing your jaw. I hate to sound all airy-fairy psychobabble on you, but really there is usually a deeper issue, and it%26#039;ll help if you can find out what%26#039;s causing the stress in your jaw.

PS - those mouth guards are a whole lot cheaper from any store that sells football supplies than they are from the pharmacy, I found!
Reply:I do the same thing during the day. I catch myself doing it and it drives me nuts, although I haven%26#039;t chipped any teeth -- yet.

An article I read about %26quot;bruxism%26quot; (that%26#039;s the medical term) recommended magnesium 100 mg, calcium 150 mg and Vit B-5 (pantothenic acid) 50 mg. Combined with: Vit A (1000 IU), Vit C (300 mg), Vit E (60 MG) and Iodine (100 mcg).

Haven%26#039;t tried it yet but plan to.
Reply:i had the same problem, go to www.homedentistry.com
