Can't stop grinding my teeth. Have any solutions?

I can%26#039;t stop grinding my teeth in my sleep. I wake up all the time with my teeth and jaw hurting. Not only do I have this problem when I am sleeping, but when I am under a lot of pressure or I am stressed out I find myself clenching my teeth when I%26#039;m awake. It%26#039;s driving me crazy! What can I do to stop grinding my teeth!?

Can%26#039;t stop grinding my teeth. Have any solutions?
You can visit your dentist and get fitted for a night guard for about $500. Or, you can do like my husband and stop chewing gum through the day. When you notice yourself grinding or clenching, stop yourself. You have to make a conscious effort to stop yourself and it will take time. But most dentists will say it%26#039;s impossible to stop yourself, well, my husband did it. He doesn%26#039;t grind at all now. Depending on how bad it is, or if you%26#039;ve already damaged your teeth, you may need a night guard in the meantime, until you actually stop grinding (if you do). The night guard doesn%26#039;t help you stop grinding, it just takes away the effect it has on your teeth. You may still experience pain in your jaw from clenching. Just try to catch yourself when you do it and stop. It will be healthier for your teeth in the end. Best of luck!
Reply:You need to see your dentist and get a mouth guard made for you. You should have told your dentist about this when you first noticed it so he could have taken care of it right away.
Reply:Well, for sleeping, your dentist can make you a mouth guard (kinda like what football players wear) so you don%26#039;t hurt your teeth.

However, it sounds like you%26#039;re way stressed--maybe a little counseling to help you cope better..
Reply:go 2 the dentist he or she will tell you what to do.
Reply:Try a mouthpiece. You can get one from a doctor or buy one for either that purpose or the kind they use for sports. Atleast until you solve the source of the problem, being something in your life that is stressing you out.
Reply:There are three types of guards that can be made for you that you would wear at night. You can usually catch yourself during the day and stop grinding, however at night all of the stresses and woes of the day are taken out on your teeth.

You can have a soft guard made. It doesn%26#039;t stop grinding, but it cushions the force and protects your teeth.

If you wear through that quickly you can have a hard guard made. Again it doesn%26#039;t stop the grinding at night, but it helps protect your teeth.

If you are still in pain and having trouble, there is something called a NTI. That type of guard is something that is worn just on the front teeth. What it does is it separates the back teeth so they cannot connect and grind together. This specific device is used for %26quot;de-programming%26quot; and in some has caused them to stop grinding completely.

Obviously each one of these works best for every different person, so talk to your DDS and see what they would feel is best for you.

Hope that helps :)
Reply:I%26#039;m sorry the only thing I can suggest is to find another outlet for your stress; like chewing on a toothpick or twirling your thumbs. (Sounds weird but it helps.) I have broken two teeth. I now wear a hard plastic night guard to protect my teeth; but still grind and have severe headaches . Along with jaw pain and loud popping that makes my ear hurt. I wish you all the luck.
