How Do I Stop Grinding my Teeth at Night When I Sleep?

For the past 10 years, I have been grinding my teeth in my sleep. I have really bad TMJ problems because of this, and my jaw is always in pain. I got a bite splint for $600, fitted at the dentist, but I just ended up chewing it all up while I was sleeping and now it doesn%26#039;t fit anymore. I am not overly stressed out, and I don%26#039;t drink much alcohol. Is there any way to stop grinding my teeth?

I am in the same boat with you. I have TMJ also. I am suppose to wear my mouth guard at night but, I am not so good about it. I wear it sometimes, then get tired of it and stop wearing it for a while.

One Dentist suggested to me that I should go and see a speech therapist so that I could retrain my tongue. He suggested that this is a learned behavior and that it could be broken, but the appropriate training had to take place.

So, I guess just like biting your nails, or cracking your knuckles this might be a habit that you have that you need to replace with a more suitable behavior.

Good Luck, I hope you find your answer.
Reply:try to control ur mouth or or try to put somethin in ur mouth at night like chew gum or somethin lol home that helps
Reply:Maybe a hypnotist can get to the inner reason for the grinding and then get you to stop?
Reply:my sister do the same thing and it was to where that she had to get a mouth guard because she was starting to break down her teeth. Also go to the dentist to see why your jaw hurts and the dentist can help yuo with your jaw issue but please go to the dentist because if you dont your pain will be on the level to where you want to scream.
Reply:Since you have already tried a bite splint ... or what we call a %26#039;mouth guard%26#039; you should tell your dentist that you have worn it out. A $600 splint should last a long time.

Perhaps you can get some muscle relaxant and take one before you go to sleep. Try it out and see if that works.

Wishing you sweet dreams :)
