Can someone recommend a good mouthguard for nighttime teeth grinding/clenching?

I really clench down on my teeth at night. My dentist wants me to do something about it b/c it%26#039;s starting to damage my teeth. If he makes a mouthguard it%26#039;s going to cost like $800. Could anyone recommend a cheaper OTC alternative?

Most dentists will make a night guard for their patient that is worn on the upper teeth.

They ARE able to make a guard for the lower teeth instead, and some people have found it easier to wear on the bottom. It is also easier to wear during daytime hours (in public) because it is less visible since upper teeth normally close over lower teeth.

If the guard is made by a dentist, be steadfast in having it adjusted (filed down/smoothed down/re-shaped) until it feels right. Don%26#039;t give up until they have it right!
Reply:at walgreens you can get a whole range of mouthgurds to choose from.
Reply:No sorry...I tried many different ones and they are all very uncomfortable. I have a problem with my jaw and I needed something to keep me from clinching my jaw at night while I slept....went all over buying different mouth pieces and they all are uncomfortable.
Reply:Go to a sports store and look at mouth guard there....you put them in hot water..then put them in your mouth and bite down to get the proper fit...
Reply:I suggest shopping around for a good price. Some dentists rip off their patients, perhaps badly. I hear one who plies this trade is able to offer a price as low as US$200. Otherwise I can%26#039;t judge if an OTC method is worth a try.
Reply:You can buy a significantly cheaper one at most pharmacies (compare $800 to $25). The trick is molding it correctly and comfortably. Try one of these before you shell out $800 for one. I still haven%26#039;t convinced myself that my headaches are worth using the one I got at CVS, but I%26#039;m sure it will happen soon. Good luck!
Reply:A sport%26#039;s mouth gaurd for about $10 buck at most any sporting goods store.
Reply:go to the dentist and tell him you are grinding your teeth at night and they can make you one...i wear one at night and it is great because it is fit properly to my mouth
